Wellness Retreat December 11 - 12, 2010

The year is coming to a close and as we reflect on the year we are absolutely thrilled with what has been accomplished and how many supporters have come through for Strength for Life.

We concluded the year with the run and the wellness weekend - from high energy to relaxation.... although there was some high energy during Zumba

Our wellness retreat,  held at a new venue, the Hyatt Windwatch,  had a new class "Zumba" and new guest speakers/presenters.  Of course, Dr. Roxanne Carfora began the day with laughs and excitement because that is how she is - Dr. Carfora has the ability to educate and entertain, her genuineness and enthusiasm is contagious and a great way to start the day!

Say NO to sugar, sweeteners, diet soda, white foods... enjoy the flavors of natural foods - high in antioxidants. (Read the  'the Makers Diet'  by Jordan S. Rubin, N.M.D., Ph.D. for references). Dr. Carfora gave each participant a card for a FREE anti-oxidant screening.  Find out where you are - 50,000 is optimal many people are well below - but you need to be informed.  Dr. Carfora is adamant about knowing your levels ...vitamin D, testosterone, B12 etc etc. You must be an enlightened patient to advocate for your best quality of care.

Lida Olson,  "a cancer survivor herself, is a certified TriYoga teacher who brings warmth, compassion and understanding to her students. Her mission is to guide students towards finding their inner strength and increasing their self-awareness and their capacity for self-care. A renewed sense of health is experienced through her relaxing classes.
Lida has been working with cancer patients for half a decade and has studied yoga for more than ten years. Going through a grueling chemo/radiation treatment balanced with a variety of complementary healing methods, she knows the value of an integrated approach to healing the whole person. Lida has the background of an RN, is a Reiki master and has an in depth training in acupressure. Currently, she is working with the Center for Mind/Body Medicine to be certified as a CancerGuide."
She is actively involved with various healing centers, hospitals and health and fitness studios offering class participants the opportunity to participate actively in their own treatment. “I try to replace worry and fear with a sense of well-being and comfort." This is the second Wellness Weekends that Lida participated in - she is a gift for us to share!

Dr. Michelle Kobbe (Larkfield Family Chiropractic) spoke at lunch explaining how subluxations, when addressed, can decrease the neuropathy that chemotherapy presents.  It is by allowing the optimal flow of energy or by limiting the blockage that we can optimize our health and wellness. Dr. Kobbe explained the many facets of chiropractic -  it is not just adjustments for back pain! The concerns that were brought up about osteoporosis and adjustments, and soft tissue treatment seemed to be well received by all.
Zumba by Amy Faiccoa was our newest welcome addition. Dance is a wonderful form of self expression and self discovery - and just so much fun. This was new for everyone so there was no pressure for the newbies - we were all newbies. Amy offers a variety of classes from Zumbatomic for kids, to Zumba Gold for seniors and individuals with limitations. There is also Aqua Zumba and Zumba toning - if you are considering a Zumba class there is one for you.

Runningagain55@msn.com/ 631-252-4926

Meditation was led by Rosemary Magginnis followed by a Reiki circle  with  Masters - Rosemary, Teresa, Patti and Carol. "Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive holistic healing method that balances your body, mind, emotions and spirit as a  whole in a relaxing manner that may promote self healing." You must allow yourself the quiet and believe in the healing power, enjoy the warmth and let it happen.

We had a pre-dinner art therapy project presented by Meghan Gasior on totem animals, a gift box was designed by each participant after a guided meditation.  Each animal represents specific traits and leads to self discovery. This is a very interesting project - just google totem animals to find what attributes you are focusing your attention on.

At our dinner we had Dawn Brauer give a very interesting presentation on the Law of Attraction, what better way to end the night but on a positive note.  Very empowering when you realize that you are in command of what you bring into your life.  "The universe does not hear good or bad; want or don't want.  It delivers unfailingly and indiscriminately what you focus on." Simply by tweaking the messages you send to be positive and deserving you will allow those benefits to be received.

To BElieve or Not to Believe.....

In science,  "a common assumption of astrologers is that celestial placements can aid in the interpretation of past and present events, and in the prediction of the future."

I believe because I believe, I trust, I have faith and sometimes given the best of belief it seems the world has a different plan. And I muddle through waiting for a sign, a change,  something GOOD!

Then there are times when everything just falls into place with absolutely no effort at all.

Today was one of those days.  Thank you Lord!

I will not bore you with details - but this is the season to BELIEVE, so please do that!

"The essence of all that you appreciate is constantly flowing into your reality. As you find more things to appreciate, your state of appreciation opens more avenues to more for which to feel appreciation."

Simple ways to reduce stress.....

Below are links to two great articles that will help you reduce stress.  The first is the 'art of breathing', so simple, so free and always available.  Yoga practitioners have utilized breath for thousands of years and now we are studying the effects on chronic illnesses. Breathing effects the heart, the brain, digestion  and the immune system.  Another 'no brainer' - we breathe - lets put it to our best advantage....

http://www.npr.org/2010/12/06/131734718/just-breathe-body-has-a-built-in-stress-reliever

This second link is perfect for the season - how giving effects us.  Is it the 'warm glow', a link to parenting or is it hormone related.  Oxycontin, a hormone produced in the pituitary gland and the brain, released during childbirth and as people bond is directly related to generosity. Be enlightened by this article and consider how you feel when you give!

Then, of course, there is a massage, a soak in the tub, a walk in the park...you have skills to tap into easily....

Hiking on Long Island - did you know?

I did run once upon a time and still try but really do not love it and it does not love me, so I picked up more biking until the day I fell and was brought by ambulance for an enormous amount of stitches where the pedal entered my calf........so hiking it is!

I had hiked once or twice (totally turned around and lost once) but I am game for any activity with my feet on the ground. So my friend and I investigated the Greenbelt trail from Hauppauge and found it interesting. The next week we investigated Caleb Smith Park - and found a jewel right here in Smithtown.  On our third adventure we followed the Greenbelt Trail from Smithtown Landing toward Sunken Meadow - up to a 3 hour hike....with a few wrong turns (that's what happens when you are so engrossed in a conversation you don't look for markings).... on our fourth we returned to the Smithtown Landing/Greenbelt area and made it all the way to Sunken Meadow and back in 4 hours no wrong turns. Beautiful!

So much fun and all you need is a walking stick or two (preferred) and hiking boots to keep your ankles safe. You will pass a group or two, maybe a couple with a few animals but most of all you are alone in nature the view of the Nissequogue is outstanding and it is quiet! This is a treat so close to us, in many ways.

The Greenbelt trail (http://www.ligreenbelt.org/) has so much to offer we can be busy for the year. There are 200 miles of the Greenbelt Trail with guided hikes of all levels for those who are concerned about getting lost or those who are less adventurous (or smarter) about investigating an activity.

I will be back on the bike because the century ride is still a goal, but until the nicer biking weather - hiking it is!

Go take a hike - you will enjoy it!

Vitamin D - the controversy

This short video just offers a snippet of the controversy of Vitamin D deficiency.  Whatever you pick up to read you can't get away from the subject so perhaps Dr. Holick PhD, MD can spread some light on it with his book "The Vitamin Solution".

We are leaving 2010 shortly and with our new 2011 annual physicals - you should ask to have your levels checked.  See where you are, think about how you feel, your symptoms and perhaps take a supplement if your doctor prescribes it. The 15 minutes of sun exposure to your arms and body may be perfect if your levels are up but may not be cutting it if they are very low.

We have learned to slather on sunscreen but we do need our Vitamin D from the sun - be informed and make the decision that works for you.

The average CBC blood work is not enough there are so many levels to be checked on - go to your appointment armed with requests - they are drawing your blood anyway.

A good thorough exam and blood work with a trusted physician is paramount to your health and wellness!

The patient should be made to understand that he or she must take charge of his own life. Don't take your body to the doctor as if he were a repair shop.

Powerful at 91 - Olga Kotelko

Shame, shame to listen to all those negative aging stories, here is a fabulous story about Olga Kotelko at 91 years old still competing.  And not that she has done this her whole life, many of her skills and talents were not attempted until she was 77.

PS -I have a head start!!!!

And Olga is very resourceful- choosing to switch up what she focus her training on since her current world marks in many events are safe!!!

So, serious strength training and cardiovascular challenges can effect mitochondria (your cells energy or power pack) and can be our 'fountain of youth'.

Read the article, set a new plan and put it into motion.

Call me Olga - I have a 30 year plan!

T'was the day after Thanksgiving....

and ...........??????

how would you finish that ?

are you still giving thanks and appreciation for family, friends and good food?

are  you stressing about the shopping holiday closing in on us?

are you jotting down thoughts for the 'new you' resolutions and goals?

are you out there in the hustle bustle and enjoying it?

are you happy with your food choices yesterday or going to the gym and burning them off?

just reflect for a minute.....

However you chose to finish that statement - remember you are the master of your destiny, so choose wisely,
set a goal
make a plan...
and follow it through one step at a time....

Initial Feedback on the Evelyn Knapp Memorial Run

"I truly hope it will become an annual event. My niece was part of the Greenvale "Pacers" Group and invited me to join. It was a beautiful run, a great tribute to Evelyn and the event was extremely well organized. Congratulations to you and all involved!" ~Patricia B
*
"It was great.
I have one suggestion, as the race grows the crisscrossing will get more dangerous. For HS sports all the athletes are fast and the X is not so much an issue. For the ordinary people, this X is dangerous for all. We had to intersect twice during the race. Could this be avoided next year?" Thanks, M

*
"It was an honor and privilege to participate in the inaugural run Evelyn's memory. I worked with Evelyn at PTI Huntington Station in the mid-90s and she was a woman who, as beautiful as she was outside, was even more beautiful inside.
Congratulations on your great work and thanks for all you do for the community. I look forward to supporting you again next year."

"This was a great event, looking forward to the next one." Thank you, Frank F.

"A pleasure and an honor to be a part of this event. My wife, sister-in-law, and nephew all enjoyed the event and had a great time.

Well organized and see this event growing and growing, given its location and when it is held. Even if it is a tough tough 5k, it plays into the message of the organization and lends to enduring just like she did and taught.

Well done." ~ Mark C.

Race Day Success

The first of anything has got to be the hardest - unpredictable even with the best of planning. So we can sit back and reflect and ...damn we did good! Not to say it went without a hitch - but all in all - we got the job done well!
A last minute change of place of registration from bath house  (which was decided on because it was covered and the weather could have been inclement).... prompted a series of 'less than pefect' decisions.

However:
  • the race started on time - very important aspect of a run;
  • everyone,  but one- just one runner was able to register and participate.
On Friday we had 325 registered runners, at the day prior to race and pick up we added 10 more - and then on race day 180 additional runners showed up.  For those of you who have not participated in a run - and we  who have not held one  - thought perhaps 100 - so 180 blew us out of the water.

Now all my number fans out there - we had 4 -5 people collecting money and registering these 180 people; we had two plastic pouches for the cash and checks - so what are the chances of money-in to registered people equalling?

Really - 4 - 5 individual volunteers - unknown to each other and the the tally was $10 off - and then we found it.  It was exact!!!  Balanced in less than 15 minutes!  YESSS!!!! Success!

So the day went - a beautiful day for a race, great competent people helping in many ways, great runners across the board, - a perfect tribute to a strong, beautiful woman - Evelyn Knapp.  Many of Evelyn's family attended, many of Martin's huge family attended - Julia, Natalie and Isabella were all apart of this inaugural run. And Martin, we couldn't have done it without you!

The buzz is to expect double the turnout next year - I am sure that is they day I am going on vacation!

Can't say enough - it was fabulous, everyone pitched in, there were happy faces - Life is good!

"Make today a great one!" ~ Evelyn Knapp

The Insomnia Blog....and reasons to...

....listen to Dr. Michael Breus on Health Media LIVE, Tuesday 6:30 - 7:00 Radio AM 1240 WGBB

When my father was diagnosed with colon cancer my doctor told me that this is one cancer that is preventable with the proper screening - "colonoscopy".

Let's hear it for COLONOSCOPY!!! -  not a pleasant prep, not a pleasant discussion - but definitely a pleasant outcome when we can get those polyps before they get us!

Now this study (with the links below via Dr. Breus' blog ) connects sleep and cancer.  There are so many things we can't change and there are as many that we do have control over.  You may accept the lack of sleep and deal with the consequences - but you best not when the consequences can be so severe.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cncr.25507/abstract

"In multivariate regression analysis adjusted for age, gender, race, smoking, family history of colorectal cancer, and waist-to-hip ratio, individuals averaging less than 6 hours per night had an almost 50% increase in risk of colorectal adenomas (OR = 1.47; CI = 1.05-2.06, P for trend = .02) as compared with individuals sleeping at least 7 hours per night."

Images....which move us to action.....

I asked in one of the last blogs what question would motivate you to change your life...now I wonder what image is necessary to do the same thing.

Prompted by the repeated ad for throat cancer where the man has a tracheostomy.......and people can still smoke???? .....or the child left at the airport...........these were powerful ads yet we still have an enormous amount of individuals who risk their lives daily by smoking.

What will it take for you to make the changes you need to adopt a life of optimal wellness?

I really would like you to think about it because as the year comes to a close - a new year is about to enter, a new you can be the focus......one small change is all you need to adopt today - to achieve your goals tomorrow.

Raw for Thirty.....May not be sexy but worth listening to....

The Center for Disease Control predicts that by 2050 1 in 3 will be diagnosed with diabetes - now we are at 1 in 10.  Digest that fact!

The following link is a 20 minute video on the benefits of eating well and why we have come to be where we are as a society. Dr. Joel Fuhrman admits that making the change will take some time, you need to begin with a few great recipes and learn to appreciate the taste of pure foods.
"Don't underestimate the miraculous self healing power of the human body when you set the ideal nutrition into motion."
Dr. Fuhrman shared some incredible reversals of disease - that surprised everyone including those in the medical profession.

What one question will change your journey???

As I drove to see my daughter participate in her first full marathon the thought occurred to me  - that one question can change your journey.  Can you think of the one question that would motivate you to make necessary changes to way you are living?

In January, I posted a blog about making goals for the year,  I followed up once or twice to ask how you were doing achieving these goals...it is now November  - how did you do?  What are you thinking about for the next goal - there must be one - you must have a goal.

I shared a story  about a dear friend who when asked what her goals were - mulled it over and then decided to enter a triathlon - she did a rookie triathlon (good baby step) and then a full triathlon after nine months.  Incredible what we can accomplish when we set a goal, and put the plan into motion.

In 1990 I started jogging - a Catholic school girl for 16 years - no sports in my history.  In May 1991 I ran my first 5 miles non stop - OMG - I now knew what it felt like to release endorphins.  A trainer in the gym asked me if I wanted to run in the NYC marathon that year...I laughed at her - said I was too old - and immediately hated hearing that.  So I trained, I submitted an application and trained - and lo and behold I was selected to run in the NYC Marathon in November.  Six months of training - only one race prior (a half marathon in Staten Island) and I finished.  But it was that one question - that changed the path of my life in many ways.  Running that marathon was my greatest physical accomplishment - but much more than that too.

So I ask you - what one question will prompt such a desire that you will change the way you are doing things,  and the road you will choose to travel?  Let me know - you can respond to these blogs or simply write to strengthforlife@optonline.net - be careful though Debbie and I share that email you may have to deal with both of us.

Illness as an opportunity...........

I feel compelled to pass on some valuable information - even if I do not have much time to offer a personal blog.

As a hospice volunteer and volunteer coordinator - I recall many cancer patients saying that 'having cancer changed their life - for the good'; and 'cancer put things into perspective', and I do know of many instances in my life where I had to rethink that 'in the big scheme of things - this is not the end all'.

"Dr. Bonnie Vestal focuses on three principles with her patients:
First, be present.    Second, find a sense of purpose.   Third, have an awareness of your sense of place in the scheme of things.
These are no small tasks in the face of stress and trauma, but Dr. Vestal insists that when life is on the line, it’s important to stop and consider these issues. “This is a whole-life job,” she explains. “It’s not just about cancer or illness; this is about your life.”

The full article can be found at: http://awomanshealth.com/illness-as-opportunity/

"The truth is, if you asked me to choose between winning the Tour de France and cancer, I would choose cancer. Odd as it sounds, I would rather have the title of cancer survivor than winner of the Tour, because of what it has done for me as a human being, a man, a husband, a son, and a father."

http://www.nature.com/bjc/journal/v103/n7/full/6605902a.html

"Our data, and that of others (Friberg et al, 2006; Patel et al, 2008), suggest that sitting time contributes to endometrial cancer risk, independent from one's participation in MVPA. We earlier estimated that as many as 22% of endometrial cancers could be avoided if women exercised vigorously five or more times per week. However, if all women had both exercised at this level and sat for 4 or fewer hours per day, then 34% of endometrial cancers could have been avoided. Thus, the incremental contribution of sedentary behaviours to the population level burden of endometrial cancer risk may be substantial."

Happy...

I believe that the very purpose of life is to be happy. From the very core of our being, we desire contentment. In my own limited experience I have found that the more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being.

Missed you all!

Apologies for the two week time span between posts...what could be happening in two weeks.  Well 9000 applications have been in and out of my house.  Yes, that was 9000 - crazy runners on Long Island.  5% would make for a successful run.

We are just happy that it is taking place and out there at this point.  Race Day...ask about that later....I can't even go there and try to predict all that can happen - good and 'not so good'.

***

Yesterday, via Facebook, I saw that Imerman Angels were looking for colon cancer patients/survivors to mentor.  Imerman Angels (one of my many favorite groups) offers the following per their website:

Welcome to Imerman Angels (http://www.imermanangels.org/)

Imerman Angels carefully matches and individually pairs a person touched by cancer (a cancer fighter or survivor) with someone who has fought and survived the same type of cancer (a Mentor Angel). Cancer caregivers (spouses, parents, children and other family and friends of fighters) also receive 1-on-1 connections with other caregivers and survivors. These 1-on-1 relationships inspire hope and offer the chance to ask personal questions and receive support from someone who is uniquely familiar with the experience. The service is absolutely free and helps anyone touched by any type of cancer, at any cancer stage level, at any age, living anywhere in the world.

I would recommend contacting them when you feel strong enough to help another...we are all in this together and we are the support that is needed.

***

I also viewed a very interesting video (41 minutes) "Winning the War on Cancer" - when you have time take a look - you can always pick up some good information - here they go into the good of Complementary Alternative Medicine.

***

And, yes,  it is Breast Cancer Awareness month....it is 'in your face' when you are already aware of it but not in the face of everyone who should be addressing their breast health - so, endure it and know that by 'shouting from the rooftops' we may help 1 or 2 or 1,000+ seek professional exams and follow up.

Getting it all out there - all those thoughts that flew through while I was not blogging...

Dr. William Li on Angiogenesis & the Antiangiogenesis diet....to starve cancer!

If you have 20 minutes - invest it in watching this video from the Angiogenesis Foundation. Dr. Li loses his mike(sound) at 15 minutes in and then regains it but it is great information- life altering I believe.

http://www.angio.org/index.php

If you can not invest 20 minutes now..this was taken from the Dr. Oz show:

Disturbing new research suggests that microscopic cancer, small cancer cells that can only been seen under a microscope, is widely prevalent. A recent study of women in their 40s indicated that 40% of them had microscopic breast cancer. Even more shocking, almost 100% of people in their 70s will have microscopic cancer in their thyroid glands.
A microscopic tumor can grow up to 16,000 times its original size in as little as 2 weeks. But new groundbreaking research from The Angiogenesis Foundation proposes that you can stop cancer before it begins to grow. This new preventive approach is called anti-angiogenesis. To learn more about anti-angiogenesis and the groundbreaking research at The Angiogenesis Foundation. Anti-angiogenesis encourages that, by changing the way you eat, you can change your “internal environment,” thereby depriving cancer cells the opportunity to grow and multiply.

Certain foods, eaten in the correct portions and frequency, can provide cancer-starving benefits. Below are 5 foods to eat that can prevent cancer growth:

1.Bok Choy This type of Chinese cabbage contains brassinin; a powerful cancer-fighter, also found in broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Bok Choy should be eaten 3 times a week, in 1/2 cup servings to obtain its full benefits.

2.Cooked Tomatoes have more cancer-fighting properties than raw tomatoes. Both contain the molecule lycopene, but heating the tomato changes its chemical structure and makes the benefits more readily available to your body. You should eat 2-3 (1/2 cup) servings of cooked tomatoes a week.

3.Flounder This fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and low in mercury. Three 6-ounce servings a week is ideal.

4.Strawberries The antioxidants in this berry help fight cancers. You should eat 1 cup a day, including the juice.

5.Artichokes contain 3 different cancer-fighting molecules. Enjoy ¼ cup of hearts per day.

So many ways to help Strength for Life....

From a dear friend regarding why her two daughters and their friend raised $$$ for Strength for Life with a lemonade stand - proudly wearing Strength for Life tees borrowed from Mom (wish I was savvy enough to convert a cell phone pix to jpeg).

"We had gone to my sister in laws house to see my niece. She is 29 and was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. She has to have a radical mastectomy and chemo. She has a one and half year old beautiful son who really needs her. She is an awesome person.
When my girls came home they said that they wanted to make a donation to a charity that deals with cancer. What better organization than yours to be the recipient of the lemonade stand."

Please send prayers out to Jillian, and pray that she makes a speedy recovery.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

A reminder from a friend..........Remember the '3' steps,
S T R  Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
1. S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
2. T *Ask the person to
TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today..)
3. R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher..
New Sign of a Stroke --------
Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue... If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

Race Application - on it's way.....

My Goodness, so many things to keep in mind!

Thank you Debbie Blair, Mike Polansky (GLIRC) and my proofers Dee, Jess and of course Debbie. This is a daunting job to TRY and get right the first time. We knew we were in for the expense because we have been talking about it for three years - so the process had to be started -  "build it and they will come" is our mantra....but all those little nitty, gritty facts....YIKES!

We are putting the request out for sponsors to all  the PTI clients that were present and would love Evelyn; Any sponsor - corporate, individual, raffle/prize donor is appreciated. We want to make the first annual "Evelyn Knapp 5K Memorial Run" a success so next year we can blow it up!

Over 30? Here's some things to remember (if you can!!!)

This information is shared from an IFCN email I received while I sit here waiting for my car to be repaired. As I write this I remember a great friend Alex Lubarsky saying how we will pay for our car repairs and question spending money on our own health/wellness.  How appropriate for me - as they told me the total cost is climbing from $338  to $1625 with an additional $995 for timing belts soon to come - OMG.  Having a 6 year old car relates to my aging - ten years ago I spent a small percentage in health care and maintenance than I am spending now. And, although not perfect I have adopted many of the healthier habits - thank the Lord! Having said that would I spend $1625.....unless I was told it was necessary...probably not - shame on me!

I trust that you know all of these - but a small reminder can't hurt!
"About the time we hit 30, our brains begin a slow, steady downward progression. This was once thought to be normal and accepted. However, this decline “is by no means an inescapable side effect of aging”. Based on new reports, we can counteract age related changes in the brain by partaking in a series of activities that will fortify mental muscle power. Here are seven ways to do just that:
Google often: Search the internet. This initiates key components in the brain that control decision making and reasoning.

Exercise: This activity can actually delay dementia and possibly reverse brain aging!

Brush & Floss: Oral care is directly linked to brain health. Gingivitis and periodontal disease are directly related to diminished cognitive brain function as you age.

Drink Sparingly: Cocktails can be beneficial for the brain but only in moderation. Excessive drinking can have the opposite effect by diminishing total brain volume.

Eat Blueberries: Research has shown that purple-hued fruits can sharpen your brain power. Anthocyanin—the dark blue pigment found in blueberries is responsible for these cognitive improvements. “It contains chemicals that may cross the blood-brain barrier and lodge in regions that govern learning and memory.”

Do Puzzles: This activity can knock a decade off your cognitive age. Take out a book of basic puzzles and start your way to younger brain power!

Meditate: More than just a great stress reliever, meditation can also enhance your brain’s gray matter. Meditation helps promote growth in the cortex - an area of the brain that controls memory, language, and sensory processing.

Never neglect an opportunity for improvement.   ~ Sir William Jones

Dan Robinson...running for his Dad!!!! Inspirational........

"I am currently on a solo run of 1002 miles in a calendar month. The distance is of course based on the date of Lance’s diagnosis, and is in memory of my Dad who died of Cancer of the esophagus five years ago in September.
To complete the event I will need to cover an average of over 32 miles per day and as I type this I am 12 days into the challenge and have covered 401 miles. Up until late yesterday things were going really well. Of course running more than a marathon a day is hard physically but I felt strong and was ahead of my average. Coincidentally the invitation to write this blog came just as I have sustained a bad injury to my left quadricep. I had to abandon my run this morning and have spent the day frantically having treatment. I think that those who know me would say that I do not quit easily and I have an enormous feeling of guilt as I sit here for the first time having missed my daily mileage target. I have tried to be responsible and do what I can to give my leg a chance to recover. Ultimately though it is probably like trying to crack a sledgehammer with a nut. I am likely faced with another 600 miles more or less on one leg.

It hasn’t taken me long though to stop feeling sorry for myself. I logged onto the LIVESTRONG website and reminded myself of why I am doing this. The stories I read there are always inspirational but most of all humbling. I would not think of myself as much of a person if I couldn’t withstand nothing more than pain to try and help in some small way. People, Lance included, have said that having cancer is the best thing that has ever happened to them. My Dad’s cancer was the worst thing that ever happened to me and yet the way he dealt with it has changed me so profoundly and given me so much determination. LIVESTRONG is a way for us all to share in these moments of strength and inspiration and I could not be more grateful for that chance. 600 miles? 1 Leg? Well, like the man said, – “pain is temporary…”

Seven foods farmers won't eat!!!!

There is always one that surprises me...this time it is canned tomatoes - there goes my marinara sauce - POMI - here I come.

When I think about the evolution of my diet - I am amazed and can't believe that it is not pure...well it is not! As an Italian who loved ham and swiss and pepper salad on crusty italian bread and meat sauce as a staple.... and to tell you I have not tasted that in 10 -15 years...one who now buys organic, eats more avocados, fruits and vegetables, opts for gluten free on most occasions - I am perplexed.  I understand that had I continued those choices my life would be different - but I did believe by the good choices I should be in a much lighter place - NOT!

I will continue to evolve and make better choices as the education reaches us.... do the same!

Another great interview from "Beyond the Boobie Trap"...

This interview covers osteopenia and osteoporosis, vitamin D testing, exercise and the effects of certain medications taken by breast cancer patients.

Take the time (30 min ) and listen carefully, with a pencil and paper at hand - great interview.  Dr. Adam Barron, author of  "Osteopenia and Osteoporosis" shares a lot of information.  New for me "do not take calcium supplements within 24 hours of the bone density test"  really??? How come no one has ever said that before.

Just today there was an article in Newsday that calcium supplements increase the risk of heart problems by 30% - hmmmm! and Dr. Barron  advises that increases in calcium beyond the suggested dose increases the risk of kidney stones.... and.........so so much good information.

Exercise resistance bands are good as are weight bearing exercises, balance exercises and tai chi get a thumbs up to help avoid the risk of falling.....sit  ups and front/forward bends should be avoided to decrease the risk of spinal fractures in those suffering with osteoporosis....

Just take the 30 minutes - I can't do this interview justice.

KEEPERS ...............

I grew up with practical parents who had been frightened by the Great Depression in the 1930's. A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a name for it... A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones.

Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, and dish-towel in the other. It was the time for fixing things: a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep.

It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that repairing, eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more.

But then my father died, and on that clear fall night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more.

Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away ... Never to return. So ... While we have it ... it's best we love it ... And care for it ... And fix it when it's broken ... And heal it when it's sick.

This is true ... For marriage ... And old cars ... And children with bad report cards ... And dogs and cats with bad hips .. And aging parents ... And grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a classmate we grew up with.

There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special ... And so, we keep them close!

I received this from someone who thinks I am a "keeper," so  why not send this to those people who are "keepers" in your life.

Good friends are like stars ... You don't always see them, but you know they are always there.

Cancer Survivor Group...Mather Hospital

Stacey Jolley facilitates a wonderful support group at Mather Hospital and allowed Debbie and I to join last night and demonstrate some basic exercises with the stability ball and bands. Strength for Life has been actively reaching out to this support group and it finally happened - then lo and behold I learned that Stacey is good friends with my cousins.

You can tell in a very short time how welcoming this group was...it is always great for us to experience this and be able to share with others who might be searching.

For information you can call Stacey at 631-689-1635

Great interview with Dr. Alicia Stanton.....

Beyond the Boobie Trap has a great interview with the author of  "Hormone Harmony" - make time for this! It addresses the imbalances of hormones,  the whys and hows and what we can do to create better balance.

Have questions about ......

sugar? cortisol? belly fat? cholesterol? adrenal gland? glycemic diets? stress?

.......so, so much information! Set aside the 41 minutes and educate yourself! I do believe you will find the interview easy to listen to and full of relevant information.
