Happy Healthy Holidays to ALL

As you may know, I have been forced to take a "paying" job which takes so much time away from the things I love "Strength for Life".  But as everything in life this will be a temporary position and I will again have time to write blogs and articles and share with you.

My thoughts, prayers and well wishes are with you for a very happy holiday season and the very best in 2012.

The True Alpha Male......

PREFACE:2009

So Debbie, what have you gotten me into now? As I arrived at her house for a day of "no kids" (except Jack - who was asleep) she presented me with an article about "Leap for Life." "LI Attorney Leaps for American Cancer Society" - Rick Collins raised more than $13,500 for ACS.

Debbie us so excited about this attorney, author of the "Alpha Male Challenge" (hmmmm), bodybuilder and defender of steroid use (what???), lecturer, magazine columnist - yada yada yada. I allowed her to go on, took the article to read and we went to work on the wellness weekend.

So, shame on me - let us not be judgemental! We met with Rick Collins today, what Debbie was able to extract from reading his web site, his bio etc, I was presented with in person. A gentleman, articulate as any I have heard, passionate about health, fitness and nutrition and willing to spend an hour or more of his time with Strength for Life.

His opening statement (isn't that like a lawyer) was how an individual is in control of what they eat and what they do! Especially during disease (dis-ease) that uncontrollable aspect that presents itself - we do have control of some aspects of our life. Evelyn Knapp (the reason for Strength for Life) said that exercise gave her a sense of control in an uncontrollable situation.

Debbie ran to buy the book - sold out in Border's, Commack. I have not read the book, I am interested in reading the book now after meeting Rick. I have looked through the table of contents - no quiche in there but there is cilantro! There are wonderful recipes for food and there is a full recipe for fitness! There is information that I recognize GAS - not as in flatulence - as in the General Adaptation Syndrome - our body's reaction to stress. The excerpts are inviting - you will want to run out (like Debbie) and buy this book. It covers it all diet, exercise and ATTITUDE!

Thank you, Rick Collins! We are gaining altitude for the Strength for Life Leap!

Please take the time and visit Rick's web site - I could not begin to add his credentials to this blog. www.rickcollins.com .

YESTERDAY:

My plunge of yesterday was directly related to Rick Collins - again we visited his office in late Spring (recall he is a motivational speaker) and I shook hands on taking the plunge and jumping from the plane.  I pride myself on keeping my word - so, although my senses told me not to do this - I shook hands and went through with the jump.

There will probably be another blog about this jump - because I am still recalling many aspects of it - some quite amusing.  Who is falling from a plane and worried that their capris are riding up - I actually considered it and adjusted them - my daughter would be proud because she consistenly reminds me "it's all about the look!"

The most difficult part of this jump was sitting on the lap of Adam - my young Brit and having him  slide us both from the very front of the plane to the very back of the plane - OMG - that was torture - THEN, Adam decided we would stand and leave the plane - the alternative is to sit - let me tell you looking down 13,500 feet, strapped to someone I don't know and being able to leave that plane was surreal..(to be continued )

Anyone wondering about my shocking pink BOA??? Debbie ran her first 1/2 marathon last weekend, the Diva Half,  and she lent me the boa  - to be seen - or perhaps to really look like I was as crazy as someone about to jump from a plane ;)

"How much do I want Strength for Life to succeed? Enough to fall from a plane to raise funds to keep us going. And - fyi - I am afraid of heights - so dig deep in your pockets and give a little or give a lot - just help us achieve our goals and continue to help others feel their absolute best. We are blessed to receive testimonials that give us the reason to continue. One person has an epiphany, or reclaims an activity that slipped away in light of the disease - that is why we do what we do. Help us - and come watch me suit up and be "fall-an-throp-ic".

The event was covered by FIOS and Waldo Cabrera who also highlighted a wellness retreat for us on MYLITV - last year. The coverage is phenomenal for Strength for Life and this man is an incredible gift - his patience, manners and professionalism is beyond all expectations. So be on the lookout for this event.

How did I get "roped into this" - I shook hands on it - and followed through. Reminder to self - be very careful when you shake on something!!! ;)

Off my bucket list! Somehow I was not nervous and/or excited - and it was better than I dreamed! We raised nearly $4000 on this event - almost enough to pay for one Wellness Retreat.

It was an exquisite day for this, many people came out to support Strength for
Life and Leap for Life - so thank you all - and everyone please know
donations are always gratefully accepted. The programs that Strength for Life
offers have been at 'no cost' to cancer survivors and it is only by our fundraising efforts that we can continue to do this. We have expanded our programs this year and have held classes at five locations. That is how we have spent this year - but in doing so our fundraising efforts were put on the back burner - we can only spread ourselves so thin. We have classes in Port Jefferson, Stony Brook, Hauppauge, Copiague and East Meadow; have made incredible connections and have been able to help a wider scope of survivors.

Our next FUNraising events are a "Psychic Night" to be held on October 23 at Popei's in Deer Park, followed by our 2nd Annual "Evelyn Knapp Run to Remember" a 5K at Sunken Meadow State Park on Sunday, November 20 at 9 am, with a Kid's Fun Run at 8:30.

We have a "Today is a Gift" 2012 Calendar - for a dedication date and/or
month for you to honor a loved one. All proceeds help Strength for Life
continue to offer FREE services to cancer patients/survivors.

Next year our goal is a hiking relay FUNraiser from Hecksher to Sunken Meadow" along the Greenbelt Trail; continuation of the SkyDive and Run and we remain open to suggestions. Last year we were contacted by a "serious" hiker, Raul, who raised money for Strength for Life and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy - by completing a 50 mile "H3 Initiative - Hammock Hiking for
Humanity" Raul has recently contacted Strength for Life and is now planning an 11 day 160 mile trek and will again raise funds for Strength for Life.

If you are, or know someone that would like to participate in any event -and fundraise - Strength for Life will help support the cost of the event - win/win.

Food Matters....watch this video by 10/8/11

    By Dr. Mercola
"Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food."
That famous quote by Hippocrates, who is often referred to as "the father of medicine," is somewhere around 2,500 years old, and for a long time this sentiment was treated as fact. Today, many scoff at this notion, thinking nutrition and medicine have very little in common; using food to quench hunger and little else, while turning to pharmaceutical drugs to treat illness.
Turning our backs on the fundamental truth that "food is medicine" is no doubt at the very heart of our current disease epidemics.
Another quote by Hippocrates, which is part of the Hippocratic Oath still recited by modern doctors today, is "First, do no harm." Unfortunately, the preoccupation with the idea that there must be "a pill for every ill" now greatly compromises this oath, because the practice of medicine is primarily focused on drugs that oftentimes do FAR more harm than good… Meanwhile, modern doctors receive virtually no training in nutrition.
Food Matters, produced by James Colquhoun, Laurentine ten Bosch, and Enzo Tedeschi is an 80-minute long fast-paced re-education for the layman on the basics of good health, which incidentally is the only way to prevent disease from occurring in the first place. The film presents powerful evidence in support of ancient wisdom that regards food as medicine, and offers practical solutions to the current health crisis.

    John Hopkins Update

AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ('TRY', BEING THE KEY WORD) TO ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY .

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins :

    1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer
cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have
multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients
that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after
treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the
cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

    2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a  person's lifetime.

    3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer
cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

    4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has nutritional deficiencies.
These could be due to genetic, but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

    5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies,
changing diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/day
and by including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

    6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growingcancer cells and also destroys
rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can
cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7.. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns,
scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

    8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often
reduce tumor size. However prolonged use ofchemotherapy and radiation
do not result in more tumordestruction.

    9. When the body has too much toxic burden from
chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either
compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb
to various kinds of infections and complications.

    10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to
mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy.
Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

    11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer
cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.
    *CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

    a. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made
with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute
would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small
amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in
color Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

    b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting
off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancercells are being starved
    .
    c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based
diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little other meat
like chicken. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites,
which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

    d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked
food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance
growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw
vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
    temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)..

    e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine Green tea is a better alternative  and has cancer fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

    12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.

    13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

    14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals,  EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroycancer cells..
Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's
normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

    15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put
the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to
have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

    16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

    1. No plastic containers in micro.
    2. No water bottles in freezer.
    3. No plastic wrap in microwave..

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.
Please share this with your whole email list........................

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

    Self Myofascial Release

I was first introduced to this therapy of using a foam roller to open up and free some muscular tightness then learned how to massage trigger points with the same foam roller and wanted to share this information with you to educate our clients.  I know that there are certifications out there for myofascial release – but many of the techniques are quite simple and the internet has a plethora of information.

Personally I had trouble with my IT band (Iliotibial band) which was causing some severe discomfort.  Cause could have been my footwear or the quad stretching I was doing using opposite hand to foot instead of the right hand to right foot stretch - a more direct line.  In any event, I had pain.  I understand this is also an occurrence with runners.  To use the foam roller to release tension in the fascia (connective tissue surrounding the muscle) for the IT band – you simply lie on your side on the foam roller, the top leg is placed at a 90 degree angle with the foot on the floor, the bottom leg has the foot raised slightly off the floor – you then you roll just from below the hip joint to a point above the knee.  This can be painful at first – start slowly to relieve the pain not cause additional pain and/or bruising.

The same technique can be used to release upper back knots; adductor tightness – let your body tell you what needs to be released.

When I was first introduced to the foam roller we were told to lay with the roller along our spine and just allow the chest and hips room to open up. No movement – simply allow the stretch to happen.  As with flexibility training – hold the stretch for 30 – 60 seconds, exhaling to allow the body to relax and ‘embrace the openness’.

    Walking Backwards.....the benefits..........

Challenge yourself ...walking backwards on the treadmill is said to burn 20% greater calories, improve your balance and be good for your brain – so why not give it a try.

The key, of course, is to start slow and not hold onto the railings.  Start at 1.0 – 1.5 to get the feeling and progress slowly eventually adding an incline. You will feel how this method of exercise utilizes your muscles differently engaging your quads and calves greatly; you are landing on the ball of your foot instead of heel; and definitely focusing on your postural muscles.

Of course, I couldn’t write about this without experimenting with it a few days.  After my normal treadmill interval routine there is a 5 minute cool down so I took those five minutes to do some backward walking.  I have been able to increase the speed to 2.2 in just 2 days and noticed that although I am walking so slowly backwards my heart rate was averaging about 75% HRM – not a cool down rate – and it kept me interested and not wanting to jump off.

There is a plethora of information on the internet about “heel striking versus forefoot striking” – one of the main points of heel striking is the degree of compression it puts on our joints – one article quotes “the impact force to be 1.5 – 3 times your body weight traveling through the heel, ankle, knee, hip, shoulder and neck.”

There is also the new craze of “minimalist foot wear” for running and hiking that boasts about the landing of the forefoot through the arches to the heel, with Dr. Oz a big proponent of this type of footwear.

The conclusion is that no matter what your fitness level is you can incorporate this forefoot landing and experience the difference.  The beginner will start with backward walking, adding an incline and speed, the more advanced may try some backwards running on a track or the new minimalist footwear…it is said that the Japanese have incorporated this method since the 40’s and tout that “100 steps backward walking is equivalent to 1,000 steps conventional walking”. The benefits realized in the practice of backwards walking/running, in addition to balance and caloric, include an increased awareness in vision and hearing – win/win!

    only experiments with unexpected outcomes."

    What's on your Bucket List??????

You may remember the movie – and if you have not seen it – it is so worth your time.

“…Carter Chambers, a blue collar mechanic, and billionaire hospital magnate Edward Cole meet for the first time in the hospital after both have been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Although Edward is reluctant to share a room with Carter, complaining that he "looks half-dead already," they become friends as they undergo their respective treatments.

Edward , a cultured loner who enjoys nothing more than tormenting his personal valet/servant, Thomas, who later reveals his name is actually Matthew.  Edward prefers to call him Thomas because he finds the name Matthew too "biblical." Edward drinks a specific brand of coffee called “Kopi Luwak”, one of the most expensive coffees in the world.

Carter, a gifted amateur historian, begins writing a "bucket list," or things to do before he "kicks the bucket". After hearing he has less than a year, Carter discards the list. Edward finds it the next morning and urges Carter to do everything on the list (and adds more things to do), and offers to finance the trip for the both of them.

The pair begins an around-the-world vacation. They go skydiving together, ……and have many other adventures…. At one time Carter reveals with great amusement that the origin of the Kopi Luwak coffee Edward enjoys, grown in the Sumatran village, is eaten and defecated by a jungle cat, and is
harvested because of the special aroma of the gastric juices.

Carter crosses off “laugh till I cry" from his bucket list

.....and "kiss the most beautiful girl in the world" is crossed off when ….(watch the movie)

….. and "help a complete stranger for the good"

We all have desires, wishes and plans – and one of the best way to assure that we accomplish them is to write them down because crossing them off – feels so good.

Strength for Life is holding its’ second annual “Fall-anthropy
Sky Diving event on September 24 – 25 at Sky Dive Long Island.

If skydiving is on your list – please join us for this event. Strength for Life will offset the cost of your jump if you choose to fundraise for us. If you raise $1000, by becoming a fundraiser we will pay for your jump; if you raise $1500 we will pay for your jump and the video of the jump. This is a win/win – you get to cross skydiving off your list or as in the movie….."help a complete stranger for the good" ...and we help cancer patients/survivors – cross off “feel my absolute best.”

(FUNdraising is easy when you reach out to friends and family - sharing your goal and sharing news about Strength for Life - we provide all the help you need including a page on the active.com website linked to Strength for Life.)  View : Last year's video

Please join us, share the news with family and friends – or support my jump
    – and just so you know -
I am facing my fear of heights as well as crossing it off my list!!!

    Iron Man, Lake Placid 2011

As you may know I was a spectator at the 2011 Iron Man where approximately 2500 individuals participated in this physically grueling event.

    Some of the stories:
At the press conference on Friday, we learned that 33-year-old Alex Gonzalez, an Ortonville, Michigan resident, once weighed 265 pounds but decided to make a life change. He lost 100 pounds and today he crossed the line in 11:47:50 (1:11:56, 5:43:26, 4:43:12).

Jared Masarek and Matthew Griffith the Welcome Dinner on Friday. Both 18 and from Connecticut, Jared said he was here to take down his father’s Ironman Lake Placid finishing time of 14:40:20 from last year, and Matthew humbly stated that he was not a superstar athlete and just wanted to finish before 17 hours. Jared easily crushed his father’s time (12:34:55), while Matthew did a bit more than just finish under the 17-hour deadline (12:54:18).

and then there is our Jess, Martin and Karina - all with there own stories to tell.

This is Jess' third Iron man - all Lake Placid and her very best time 12:48.  I was able to see Jess train for all three - but his was the first time I saw how her body reacted and the beginning of recovery - AND incredibly she is signed up for Lake Placid 2012.

    What to Buy Organic.....

The List: The Dirty Dozen and The Clean Fifteen

"Eat your fruits and vegetables! The health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure. Use EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides to reduce your exposures as much as possible, but eating conventionally-grown produce is far better than not eating fruits and vegetables at all. The Shopper's Guide to Pesticide in Produce will help you determine which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues and are the most important to buy organic. You can lower your pesticide intake substantially by avoiding the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating the least contaminated produce.

Commodity crop corn used for animal feed and biofuels is almost all produced with genetically modified (GMO) seeds, as is some sweet corn sold for human consumption. Since GMO sweet corn is not labeled as such in US stores, EWG advises those who have concerns about GMOs to buy organic sweet corn."

    Back to Hiking.......

Friday night Debbie and I finally met with Raul Perez, our hiking fundraiser who will be leaving Saturday or Sunday 6/25-26 for the 50 mile trek on the Appalachian Trail - ending on the Connecticut border.  The H3Initiative - Hammock Hiking for Humanity was brought to us by Divine Intervention.  You may have read an earlier post about this, to summarize I read about some incredible Long Islander's achieving outstanding goals - and verbalized to Debbie I wanted to consider a Hiking fundraiser.  Within days we received an email that we had a new fundraiser...usually we have asked others to join in an event or have some knowledge.  I wrote an email back and inquired about what they were interested in doing - and Raul answered he decided to raise money for a charity and chose Strength for Life for his Hiking Fundraiser.   (there are no coincidences)

We have been emailing back and forth - had a few meetings cancelled and finally met the  'Water Monkey" Raul Perez.  Raul has been camping and hiking all his life and has a number of very informative videos and Hiking 101 tutorials, if there is anything you want to know - he has the answers and suggested sites.

Raul's goal was to raise $2000 - he is at $1465 - if you want please help him achieve his goal...

Raul will be sending us a live feed for his trek - we will add the feed information as soon as we get it.  We will be able to track his progress and guarantee there will be videos to follow the event.  Raul has a great sense of humor - you will be entertained and informed.

Now for me, myself and I - we started to hike the Paumonok Path - the goal is to hike the entire 125 miles to Montauk by the end of summer - but not overnight trips. This girl likes a shower and bed to rest her weary feet. Yesterday we started at the Trail Head - in Rocky Point and did five miles out and back - next time we will go the 10 miles or so in one directions leaving the cars at different locations.  FYI - Paumonok means Long Island to the  Algonquins...  Wooded and remote - we saw one runner, then two other runners on a side road and a dead baby deer - very sad... also a few butterflies - little else but green - ferns and evergreens and more.  The bad part - was lone star ticks that loved my socks....too many to discuss - and that freaked me out a bit.   I am so not a nature girl when it comes to that.

Lesson learned - because the Paumonok Path is very narrow and overgrown long pants and gators are the way to go. In the end - it is nice to have another goal and there is nothing like the quiet and beauty of our Long Island.

Watch this movie - give it some thought

From June 11 - 13 only!!!! extended until the 20th

The Great Cancer Hoax: The Brilliant Cure the FDA Tried Their Best to Shut Down...

The beginning is heart wrenching;  the education is priceless..... this is quite lengthy but it is interesting throughout....and definitely thought provoking..

In case you do not make it to the end  ...."...current approaches to combat cancer rely primarily on the use of chemicals and radiation, which are themselves carcinogenic and may promote reoccurrences and the development of metastatic disease..."

Since 2009, permission for the final phase of FDA clinical testing to allow antineoplastons to be FDA approved has been granted. The only obstacle are the $300 million needed to pay for this final phase of clinical testing....and the FDA requiring children with inoperable brainstem glioma to also undergo radiation in these Phase 3 trials, claiming it would be "unethical" not to do so.

    Another Retreat Testimonial....

"I had a wonderful time at the strength for life week-end. Sometimes I get myself in a rut and can not get myself out of it. This week-end has renewed my inspiration and had gotten me moving again. Monday morning I was up by 6am and out walking by 7:15. I did that every morning this week and then I came home and read some Scripture and meditated for half an hour. I have been doing this for years but I kind of lost interest about a month ago but I have it back again. THANK YOU SO MUCH . I am so grateful, I know this helps me to feel better about my health and about myself. God bless you all."

    they keep making it easier....

While I waited at Best Buy for a new printer (ARRGHH!) I came upon this advertisement...
E Zip Trail Z.  My initial understanding was that you can adapt your bike with a battery operated system to assist you when needed.  Of course I googled this when I got home - the E Zip Trail Z sells electric bikes that allows you to monitor your output and assist when you need it -  (hills I say).  I believed that this would be the impetus for weekend warrior cyclists to attempt longer rides - they are their own SAG wagon.

I believe we are moving in the right direction - very interesting - however, the bike weighs 68 lbs - that is a lot of weight and probably you would need assistance. I am curious to see the new improved models to come.

I am more inclined to invest in a tri-motorcyle....

Laura Cerrano - Feng Shui Manhattan - Again we were blessed to have met Laura an 'old soul' we all agree. Laura spent many hours with us once again.  Laura explained about the Bagua (life station map), placement of furniture, colors, mirrors, bedrooms, success, wealth and serenity......my suggestion is call Laura for a consultation. Based on the testimonials I have read about Laura- you will receive unexpected and welcomed changes in your life by making small changes in your environment.

Laura demonstrated proper protocol to follow for a smudging with white sage. A smudging is performed to cleanse negative thoughts, negative or bad spirits and energy. She pointed out that between cancer treatments it is a good practice to smudge the area you reside in. If you google 'smudging' - there is much information on how to and why - read all about it - there is no wrong way if your intention is pure.

Laura led us through and art project addressing the release of some unnecessary feelings/beliefs we have been carrying with us.  We had to adapt the original idea a bit - but that's how you roll in life.  Water balloons were filled - 100+, then we dipped them in paint and threw them and the unnecessary thoughts at a white painted board.  (we did this outside ;) ) The project was a work in progress constantly changing - it was like watching fireworks with oohs and aahs..... And it felt so good to 'let it go'.

The Viana Hotel and Spa - the first ever Feng Shui Designed and Leed Certified Hotel and Spa on Long Island... was one of the projects by Feng Shui Manhattan.

***Here is where the paths cross - Dr. Pina LoGiudice will be holding a viewing of her appearance on the  Dr. Oz Show at the Viana Hotel and Spa this Friday....

    Jacqui and Debbie,

This weekend was a truly wonderful experience. I met some really special people and learned some fantastic new skills. All of this would not have been possible if it weren't for the two remarkable people that made the whole experience happen, YOU !

    Thank you so much
It was an experience I will never forget.

    *****

What a wonderful organization.  I am a recent breast cancer survivor and this was the first organization I reached out to for support.  What a positive experience.  I was part of their wellness weekend which was free to any cancer survivor and what an enlightening experience.  It was such an uplifiting weekend and I learned so much about so many ways to get my life back on track and stay healthy; physically and mentally.  I was afraid before I went that it may be a bit of a "downer" being with so many others with cancer but it was just the opposite, it was such a celebration of life and a very positive experience.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the top of my bald (from chemo) head.
    T.K.

    Dear Debbie & Jacquie:

WOW!!! don't know what I had expected this weekend.  BUT it was truly amazing.  The group was just perfect--still have aches this am but I'm smiling & joyful that I went.  Thanks again and keep in touch.

    Hello Debbie & Jackie,
I can't thank you enough for the wonderful weekend.  It was a wonderful experience, better than I imagined!  If there is ever anything I can assist you with, please do not hesitate to ask.  I would love to volunteer for the next event you sponsor.
    Thanks again,

    East Meadow/Nassau here we come.....

Received a phone call from Stars Rehabilitation and it looks we got the green light to hold classes there - just need to finalize the paperwork - YES!

Originally we wanted to keep our classes out of a clinical setting because we thought they would have a much better atmosphere...however, the Stony Brook classes at the Cancer Center really took off and the affiliations with the hospitals lend credibility to our program - so bring it on - we are thrilled.

    Stay tuned for further details....

The strength and determination to continue your path...

I watched this incredible video  "Heather Dorniden of the University of Minnesota races the 600m at the Big 10 Indoor Track Championships" and felt compelled to share it with any of who are not on our FB page and can not see the share there.

What a lesson!  This is one girl showing us a real life lesson.  We train, we plan, we expect certain results and sometimes you fall, you find a wrinkle in the plan - what then....throw your hands up and believe that it is over or fight for whatever the best result is - and win!

I can relate this to many situations - our cancer survivors, of course, come to mind - the brave determination to fight the battle of the word "cancer".  The word alone starts a rumbling - and then we have 'the way it was presented' - not always in a 'positive outcome' way but you must accept the battle and move forward in a mindful health driven way.  I have heard so many incredible stories, so many unbelievable circumstances that have been averted, so much success.... "Believe you have received it and it will be yours".  The law of attraction, the power of positive thinking - whatever you want to call this - just BELIEVE.

And..... ' there but for the grace of God"  - we all face these falls in our lifetime - they could be a daily inconvenience, they could be life altering - all the same - they must must be faced with the determination to overcome them - to move forward toward our goal.

REBOUNDING for Lymphedema & much more

I just have to cover this exercise because the benefits are invaluable to all of us. Rebounding (that small personal trampoline) has phenomenal benefits. We first learned of the effects of rebounding compressions during our cancer exercise specialist certification – and it stuck. The amazing part is that you can start with 2 min of small compressions on the rebounder 1 -2 times a day and work yourself up to more time – and you will because it is easy, it is fun, it is convenient and you will see results. Enough said?!

Believe me, as a personal trainer, I have heard every excuse ‘not to’ exercise and trust me I have heard myself say a few as well. It doesn’t matter what your excuse of the day is – just do something. Exercise is not fun – sports are fun – that’s recreation – exercise just has to be done it is that simple – it is like brushing your teeth - just do it.
Regarding the mini trampoline and the lymphatic system – there are articles galore out there in cyberspace however I am citing from the Better Health Update by Monte Cline, Clinical Nutritionist.

    Lymphatic Cleansing Effect

To me, nothing is more important about rebound exercise than the unique way it affects the lymphatic system. Most people don’t know a lot about their lymphatic system, since our education and media is obsessed with our other circulatory system—the cardiovascular system. The lymphatic system is a second circulatory system that relates primarily to immune response and drainage. The lymph is a clear fluid containing T- and B-Lymphocytes. Dr. Morton Walker, in his book, “Jumping for Health”, describes the lymph system as the:

“…metabolic garbage can of the body. It rids you of toxins, such as dead and cancerous cells, nitrogenous wastes, fat, infectious viruses, heavy metals, and other material cast off by the cells.”

I like to think of it as the “storm sewer” system of the body, while the digestive tract is the regular sewer system.

Lymph is moved by hydraulic action. The lymph vessels are full of one–way valves that open up only in the direction of the heart. When the pressure below a valve is greater than above (such as when you’re moving downward on your bounce on the rebounder), the valve is pushed open to allow the lymph to flow.

The main distinguishing point between the lymphatic system and the cardiovascular system is that the former has no heart—no pump. So how does the lymph fluid move through this system? There are three ways to move the lymph:
    1. Muscular contraction from exercise and movement
    2. Gravitational pressure on the lymph vessels
    3. Internal massage of the lymph vessel valves

When we move the muscular contraction squeezes the lymph vessels, moving the lymph along. Walking and almost all exercise have this effect. But rebound exercise stimulates all three of the above, perhaps better than any other single exercise.

The most common health problem of our world is about cleansing congestion from the lymphatic system. It’s called the common cold. Few people understand that a “cold” is a lymphatic cleansing reaction. Anything we can do to keep the lymph moving better helps prevent colds or assist in healing them. The worst thing you can do for a cold is what most people do—take decongestant drugs to“dry up” the lymphatic drainage …and thus thwart the lymphatic cleansing process!

    Arthritis Effects

Foreign substances entering our joints provokes an immune system response by lymphocyte white blood cells to clean up the toxins involved. But what if those toxins aren’t drained from the joint by the lymphatic system? What if they just get caught in the joint cavity? Then the synovial cavity lining surrounding the joint is damaged.

The joints actually do have a “drain plug” in the form of lymphatic vessels to eliminate the toxins. But for that lymph drainage to work, the lymph must be flowing. You need movement—exercise—and the best exercise for stimulating that lymph flow is rebounding.

Today, rebounders are even made with a sturdy handle bar they cost from $45 – 300 – for the purpose we are using them I have purchased the $45 model which has held up very well. After becoming very comfortable on the rebounder you will begin to spend more time on it – you can jog in place on it and even jump around a bit – it can be fun trying different experiences.

    I support this whole-heartedly....

Q: As I move from active treatment to survivorship, how can I ensure that I am getting the care I need and doing all that I can to avoid recurrence?

A: The following are 10 tips for moving forward.

    • Get a summary of your treatments. Have a list of what surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy doses you received so that you can communicate these to your primary care providers. This will help you plan for the next tip on the list.

    • Make a plan for monitoring the long-term effects of your cancer treatment. Talk to your doctor about the potential long-term effects of your treatment and what to watch out for. For example, some cancer treatments can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems or second cancers; others can have an impact on your bones.

    • Learn how to manage the fear of recurrence. First, find out your risk of recurrence from your healthcare provider. Second, remember that risk is based on averages and does not apply to you as an individual. Third, consider counseling or other assistance to help you face your fears and move forward.

    • Get moving. If you choose one healthy thing to change in your life, physical activity is likely to have the fastest effect on how you feel and also potentially reduce your cancer-related risks. Make opportunities to walk or take stairs. If it’s just too hard to do alone, find an exercise program to join to get you started. Check your local YMCA for a LiveSTRONG® exercise program near your home or workplace.

    • Eat well. Your diet doesn’t have to be perfect, but fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can make a big difference in how you feel. Eating healthier foods can make it easier to avoid the things that add weight or complicate digestion. Talk to a nutritionist if you are unsure what is healthy for you or if you have digestion problems.

    • Live a healthy lifestyle. Exercise and nutrition are just a part of the big picture. To help ensure your long-term survival and a better quality of life, stop smoking, limit alcoholic drinks to one per day, and use sunscreen to protect your skin. Also make sure you get sufficient vitamin D. Your doctor can do a blood test to measure the vitamin D in your body and make recommendations for how to get the right amount.

    • Reclaim your body. Most women gain weight following breast cancer treatment. Weight control is important. Menopause, tamoxifen (Nolvadex®), and aromatase inhibitors can lead to body changes and weight gain. Check with your doctor and a nutritionist and consider joining an exercise program to help you control your weight and build muscle instead of fat.

    • Manage your symptoms. Don’t suffer unnecessarily. Talk to your doctor if you have fatigue or lack of stamina that does not improve with time, “chemo brain” that makes it hard to work or remember what you need to do, or other aches, pains, and symptoms that make it hard to enjoy your life. Make an appointment to focus solely on the symptoms that reduce your quality of life.

    • Connect with other survivors. Although your family and friends are great support pillars, many women find it immensely valuable to talk or exercise with women who have experienced what they have and truly understand what it’s like to be a survivor.

    • Make use of available resources. Explore the options online and in your community for cancer survivors and especially breast cancer survivors.
For more information about survivorship, visit www.fhcrc.org/patient/support/survivorship, call (206) 288-1046, or check www.LIVESTRONGCarePlan.org.
Dr. Karen Syrjala is a clinical psychologist and the co-director of the Survivorship Program at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. She also serves as director of the center’s Biobehavioral Sciences Program. Dr. Syrjala says the best thing about working with cancer survivors is their eagerness to live life to the fullest. “I feel honored to do my job because I am working with people at a time of life when they’re most open to new experiences and they’re most able to make changes in their lives,” she says. Dr. Syrjala received her doctoral degree from Boston University and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
