Ragnar Relay developments......

The plans are developing for 'Ragnar Relay', 12 courageous participants, albeit crazy - are excited and started training for this event. A group of 12 will run the 182 miles from Woodstock to the Bronx - each covering 3 legs; approximately 15 miles, between 3 - 8 miles a leg. Sound interesting - join them...... gather your group -

Strength for Life will help defer your costs if your decide to fund raise for us.

From the Ragnar Relay website:
Ragnar was a 9th century Norse King. He was a pirate, a raider, a conqueror, an explorer, and a wild man. The tough, fearless, rugged attributes of this Norse King are shared by all who participate in a Ragnar Relay. In much the same way, a Ragnar Relay provides runners the freedom to roam, to explore - a free-spirited curiosity to get out there and experience outdoor adventure. And maybe even to conquer. And though tough or rugged may not perfectly describe you, these attributes become a goal - something to strive for.

In a Ragnar Relay the wild nature of this Norse King is embraced by many participants. Participants who aren't afraid to paint their van plaid, to bring along their own hair band, to join together in yelling as they cross the finish line. You may think that you are not one of them, but you are. Everyone has a wild side and nothing brings it out of you like a Ragnar Relay.

Long live the Ragnar in us all

Add a little "Simplicity" into your life...

Okay, we all know this is a completely CRAZY time of the year--gifts to buy, holiday's to host, snow storms to battle, so WHY do I pick this time to challenge my body and squeeze in something for myself???

Rosanne, owner/instructor of SIMPLICITY YOGA in Kings Park, answered that question for me last night after my very first Hot Vinyasa class. After putting my body into positions I never thought possible, finding muscles I never knew existed and being pushed to the point that my body was shaking while holding some of the poses, Rosanne lowered the lights, took us through some guided meditation and told us to thank ourselves for doing something positive and healthy-because WE CANNOT GIVE OF OURSELVES IF WE DO NOT GIVE TO OURSELVES--wow-what a profound statement!

I have heard, before, that we can't take care of others if we do not take care of ourselves-but it never quite hit me like it did when Rosanne said it last night. When you think of everything we give to others everyday -to our children, to our spouse, to other family members, to our friends, to our job and to everything and everybody attached to all that, is it "selfish" to give an hour to yourself?? No way--we all deserve it. So please, make it a point to "give" something to YOURSELF today, your body, mind and spirit will thank you for it!

With love and happiness, (and a lot of soreness!)
Debbie

A Holiday thought.....

Somehow, not only for Christmas
But all the long year through,
The joy that you give to others
Is the joy that comes back to you.
And the more you spend in blessing
The poor and lonely and sad,
The more of your heart's possessing
Returns to you glad.

Let's look ahead!

2010 - here's is the initial plan:

Wellness Weekend in February
Comedy Show in March
Woodstock to the Bronx Relay in May
Sky Dive in July
Marine Marathon in October

How can you get involved?

Tentatively the February Wellness Weekend is for SPOHNC - Oral, Head and Neck Cancer patients/survivors. If you are interested or know someone who is - go to our website and complete the contact page with a notation to the weekend. If you have contacted us previously, we will be getting back to everyone in January when a date is set.

Comedy Show - COME! and support us in our first 2010 fund raiser! Want more involvement, help us to collect raffle prizes from local businesses - use all you contacts! Still want more: help us that night - selling raffles, setting up - or any other way you can think of.

Woodstock to the Bronx - Ragner Relay, NY - support our athletes OR gather a group of 6 - 12 and become a Strength for Life team! Through the Strength for Life website - under "Donate" - Become a Fundraiser - you can start a web page and ask for support from all your family and contacts. We will have further information and assist you getting started.

Sky Dive for Strength for Life - is that on your bucket list? Here's your opportunity to make it happen and help others at the same time. We are in the beginning stages of organizing this event. We will be happy to pay for your jump when you raise a $$$TBD for Strength for Life. Think about it!

Marine Corps Marathon October 31 in Arlington Virginia, we have contacted the organizers and ask that we become an official charity of the marathon. We already have a team of runners who want to participate and raise $$$ for Strength for Life. Support our athletes OR start training and run. We will be happy to pay the entrance fee and bear some cost of your participation for a $$$TBD. Something else to ponder and share!

And it is only December 13 - just think what we can add to this list. If you have any ideas- please share them with us. Debbie and I entertain everything that comes our way.

Thank you for you support! Keep coming back and checking in with us!

Stalemate!

Not a good word nor a place to be when you are trying to get ahead. We keep running into issues that force us to STOP! So many interested participants, all Debbie and I want is to get the classes going again and the places we were dependent on fall into some black hole. Are you kidding? We have corporate insurance, we each have personal professional insurance - what is the problem!!!!!!!!

At the church it seemed to be a matter of timing and having someone there to lock up after us; at the cancer center we are questioned about why we charge $0 and it is bureaucratic red tape; hospitals the same! We are now into plan F (maybe) - been through all the others...keep us in your prayers that the next plan is the right plan.

Sue Grafton writes novels by the alphabet "A is for Alibi.... I recently saw she is up to 'U" It took her many years - so I guess that was my message - perseverance is the answer!

Wednesday night........

Feeling compelled to write a little something so you all keep checking in for the real news. I received an email from Susan B. Komen group to vote for their charity in the Chase Community Giving....hmmmmmmmmmm really?

Strength for Life so needs those votes, so needs a chance at $25,000, is that short sighted? Of course it is, Susan B. Komen needs $25,000 - a donation/grant/gift means so much to all of us. I wrote a return email- that I would cast a vote for them if they would cast a vote for Strength for Life...we are all in this together!

Our mission is about helping others struggling with the effects of cancer. Strength for Life is about promoting exercise to assist cancer patients/survivors feel their absolute best during their treatment and recovery. $25,000 is a huge amount to Strength for Life at this stage - a Long Island based organization with all volunteer services - $25000 goes directly to the promotion and education of exercise to cancer patients/survivors.

Chase allows 20 votes to different charities, I have cast quite a few for other organizations perhaps at the cost of our own - but they all deserve the opportunity, their missions are pure! As Debbie and I talk with more and more support groups, we realize how in sync we are with that one cause - to help others. We will all have our time to shine -nice for it to be sooner than later - but it is always about the journey. For us, it is about each individual we get to know, to share our information and assist their full recovery/transformation to fitness/wellness.

Thankful each day.............

More than a week ago, I accepted a challenge to write each day what I was thankful for. It came about on Facebook - and a I, personally, find it difficult passing up a challenge. Well the first day, of course, it was personal - I was thankful for my daughter and the wonderful person she has become - yada, yada, yada (she is though). The feedback questioned whether I was hitting the bottle - because it came out of nowhere to many.

The original challenge stated it would be more difficult as the days neared Thanksgiving - however, I believe it has become easier. There are so many things to be thankful for - we just have to stop and notice them all.

Well today, I received an email from Sportsmith.net - that they would donate the necessary stability balls we need for our next class and the next wellness weekend. Awesome!

I noticed our stock had dwindled after the past wellness weekend and sent out an email - and Troy responded favorably to our request. If I only had that "staples" button - that was EASY!

Thank you Troy, thank you all that donated to Deesrun.com (over $3000); thank you all that donated to "Train the Trainer"; thank you my friends and family for being my friends and close family! Life is Good!

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

I get nervous.....

when I see that so many days passed with not an update. OMG - forgive me! But be grateful I am not filling the pages with nonsense - like this one.

Keep coming back - there will be important updates coming soon - why you ask? because Debbie has BIG plans. The wellness weekend just started the ball rolling, one blog reader had to ask about a "splinter group" and where do you think that one comment will bring us. NAVEL, move over - Strength for Life is coming after you for Cancer Wellness specifically.

Nothing like this on Long Island yet? Must be our calling.

Quite seriously - all is good, and may we be blessed enough to be able to educate many cancer patients/survivors and caregivers with tools to use for the mind, body and soul.

Upper GI Cancer group at Stony Brook

Tonight Debbie and I had the opportunity to meet with another support group at the Stony Brook Cancer Center for upper GI cancer. Although we were well received we did not receive anyone ready to jump up and join our fitness class. Mull it over - you will learn to love us and the message we send soon enough.

On the way out, nosey as we are - we walked around checking out spaces. The Cancer Center has approved Strength for Life to hold a class there - so we were prospecting.

Lo and behold the SPOHNC group was having there meeting on an off night - so we got to talk to Dennis and George again. They had read our blog and knew that our weekend was a success; and we shared with them that our next weekend (February '10) is earmarked for their group. SPOHNC had so many interested participants in the classes and the weekend we wanted to offer them the opportunity to be our guests for the forthcoming wellness weekend.

What a wonderful opportunity for Debbie and I to meet so many fabulous individuals.

Anti- climax????

Oh - all that planning, and now it is over! You can wish your life away, can't wait till this and that is over (I have been guilty) and then there is the let down that it is over! So many wonderful emotions were shared, we had laughter, tears and many "Ah-hah" moments. There were needed hugs and willing huggers; there were moments that laughter was not appropriate - but none-the-less acceptable because we were all on the same page.

Debbie and I do our 'shtick' during the strength training class - we play off each other - laugh at each other and try always to make the moments light.

We were followed by Michelle, a young, albeit wise, yoga instructor. Michelle introduced yoga and the asanas - in a way you had to understand the simplicity of the movement. Listen to your body, this is not a competition, relax into it. IT FELT SO GOOD!

Lunch, lightness and cookies!!!!!!! A chance to be one - together!

Then Joe came! Totally unassuming, uncomplicated - no wait these words are all wrong. With Joe there is no complication, no assumptions - he is a soft gentle man, welcoming soul, patience is his aura. Joe allowed all to transpire around him - and when everything settled - he took hold of the class. Joe broke down the barriers, he introduced tai chi in the most basic of ways. How can you build on a subject without the true essence of what it is! The forty-five minutes was too fast for all - we wanted more - of Joe! How can you ask someone to swing their arms round and round for a time with their full attention, how can you teach one simple movement and have everyone wanting more - it was Joe the person, what he has learned in the practice of martial arts that we were craving more of.

We gave them no rest, we collected chairs in a circle and Michelle took over for a chakra meditation. Twenty of us in a circle, all visualizing, feeling each chakra, each hue spinning....powerful.

From chakra meditation to a reiki circle, healing hands! Three of our cancer survivors were also reiki masters - Thank you!

We then adjourned for anti-oxidant screenings by Teresa Carfora, eye opening information. 50,000 is the goal - so where are you? Most of us not nearly there.

Sorry there was no time to freshen up - a quick visit to their rooms and dinner was ready to be served. Good food, good conversations - and more dessert!

Roxanne Carfora, DO - anti -aging specialist, functional medicine practictioner, family medicine doctor - honors abound- kept the audience captivated! Everyone was focused on her information - more ah-hah moments! Remember, these are cancer survivors/patients and the information shared this night - was far from what they learned by their traditional doctors. What should you eat? how much vitamin supplements of C & E is appropriate - if at all? Soy - good or bad for breast cancer patients? Sugar - cancer cells feed on sugar? Alkaline vs Acidity - where does cancer survive best? Lemons are acidic but convert with water to alkalize the system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!

A lesson: Like geese, people who share a common direction and sense of community, who take turns doing demanding jobs, and who watch out for one another, can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of their teammates. Geese are defined by how they stay connected with one another.

The Night Before................

Not Christmas - although by the looks of my car it might as well be. It's the first wellness weekend, with scattered items galore; printers that decided to run out of ink, instructors (volunteer remember) that have yet to confirm; loss of electricity and phone lines - BREATHE!

Go with the flow, it is about the intention, everything happens for a reason- these are the thoughts I am trying to Inhale, Exhale!!!!

Honestly, I know it will be alright - but what is a blog without drama! It has been a bit hectic because we really don't know what to expect and what could go wrong - but we are doing this for wonderful people, and however we need to make it happen we will.

Say a prayer for us tonight and tomorrow - we can use all the divine intervention you can drum up.

Be well, check back - it is sure to be a story!

Please continue to support our events - the comedy show in March, and a group sky dive in May.....the coming year promises some great experiences.

NAVEL EXPO - November 1, 2009

Awesome for Strength for Life at the Navel Expo. Prior to our attendance Debbie mantra was "on fire!" and she definitely lived up to that.

We had the opportunity to meet many wonderful individuals at the Navel Expo, some came to us and some we ran down. We were the only booth that did not mind people passing us up. You don't know anyone living with cancer or affected by cancer? GREAT! So, not the case for most.

Our intent was to get 'Strength for Life' out there, spread the word.By doing this we can ask for the support we need. We returned with resources for the exercise dvd we want to produce; we met comediennes that can help on our next comedy show fund raiser; we spoke to a few willing sky divers for the May fund raising event - (a group sky dive for Strength for Life); news media; yoga/reiki and spiritual/wellness practitioners and so on. Many deserve a full blog - and that will be addressed as the time moves on.

It was great - again - thank you Alex Lubarsky!

We did abandon the table at times to sit in on a few of the lectures - incredible information shared - an extraordinary event. Knowledge is power, there was much to be shared in one day.

Train the Trainer

Our second annual 'Train the Trainer' event has been on going for the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness month) at the Personal Training Institute facilities.

The idea is to kick the butt of your trainer for a donation! Revenge is sweet! Huntington Bay texted (we are so modern) in their total of $1200.

Thank you so much Christina Zito (Mgr) and her couragous staff! This money is earmarked for the wellness weekends - Huntington Bay sponsored four cancer survivors/patients to our new wellness weekends with this collection.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts - you rock!

Kick Cancer's Butt

So Debbie's at it again googling galore, there is much to be said for googling! Debbie came across the Kick Cancer's Butt web site and immediately had to contact them. Can we get Strength for Life information in your beautiful organizer?

Shameless, I think not - (we have been down this shameless path in previous blogs).

KCB is dedicated to providing strength and financial support for selected cancer programs and research. Georgia Cancer Foundation was chosen as the recipient of one event due to their extensive programs addressing all cancer throughout the state of Georgia.

You never know when Strength for Life will have it's Georgia chapter, Tia make room on your schedule for us!

Letting everyone know that the KCB Survivor Organizer is finally online and for sale. A great gift and a must have for anyone diagnosed with cancer. These can be personalized, they are found on top of the page, visit the web at:

Goals and Winning!

"The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don't define them, learn about them, or even seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them."
Denis Waitley

You might have picked up on my preoccupation with goals in older blogs. I believe they are essential to achievements. As a personal trainer I use the good ol' January 1st date to ask my clients to think about a fitness goal for the year. This can be as simple as walking 30 minutes three times a week to competing in a triathalon. I am guilty of embracing the 'baby step' theory to achieve these goals. I suspect that is because it works best for me.

I had a client who wanted to lose 30 lbs for her son's Bar Mitzvah in six months. Let's break it down - that is 1.15 lbs a week; which means 4025 calorie deficit a week (3500 calories = 1 lb) which is 575 a day; cut out 250 calories a day - (you can easily see that being two slices of bread, two cookies, a second serving) and add 325 calories expenditure in exercise - 30 to 45 minutes a day, wearing a heart rate monitor which could even be broken down to 3 fifteen minute session. Possible, I think so, to look great at her son's Bar Mitzvah priceless (I just had to say that)!

In that still moment (we spoke about in the latest blogs) visualize what you want to achieve, how it will feel, how it looks, when it will be, who will be there - every aspect you desire. Be specific! Your thoughts should be as clear as you want the results! You can write them down on your vision board, then plan the steps to achieve this. Set yourself up for success - small markers to pat yourself on the back! Good Job!

It will happen - you will succeed!

"Minds are like parachutes - they only function when open." Thomas Dewar

I admit to "blogger's block" as Debbie labeled it, if you checked in this week there was an entry - which I deleted the next day. I felt I had to update the blog and added an article from the American College of Sports Medicine - but you can read that in the news.

I have two hours between appointments today - so I checked myself into Border's! I absolutely love book stores and music stores which are combined (Yeah!). So, Rick Collins, I was disappointed not to find a copy of your book "The Alpha Male Challenge", we really must address this! There are so many books here I want to purchase - but since I have three or four at home that I bought and are still unread - I will not.

Besides, I was given a "Kindle" for my birthday last year and can download books in a minute. Problem - there is nothing like paging through a book that interests me, technology does not always win - it is just very convenient.

A very kind sales woman wanted to share her interest in one book - (she doesn't know me) - although this book was very interesting, with the plethora of books I am interested in - this comes way down the list of possibilities.

Drawn to Deepak Chopra's new book "Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul", I have always believed in the mind/body connection - healthy body/ healthy mind or something like that. Deepak Chopra is the author of one my top ten books "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success", I suppose you are somewhat drawn to writers you know and respect and find easy to comprehend.

I understand Debbie's blog about settling the mind, listening to your heart - it's the place my mind used to go to on a long run, I often have that same experience in the shower (TMI?) there is something about the water, no distractions that opens my heart to clarity. I am sure that we all have a place that offers that feeling, that serenity - where is yours?

Here's a quote that is a spin on what both Debbie and I are trying to say but a bit more eloquently:

"The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, or not to anticipate troubles, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly."
Siddartha Guatama Buddha

"Settle your mind so you can listen to your heart"

Debbie's Virgin Blog

Okay, I am not promising much-writing, well, not my best attribute, I would normally not even be interested in blogging, but since Jacqui has a case of "Bloggers' Block", I am stepping up to the plate for my counterpart.
So what's on my mind? What's NOT on my mind is more like it!

The dishwasher has water sitting in the bottom (phone call to make-set up a service appointment), the boiler needs to be replaced (appointment at 9am for estimate), make kids doctor appt, call back SFL contacts, Wellness Weekend is fast approaching, 2 big seminars are breathing down our necks, email everyone who has contacted SFL in the past 2 days-56 unopened email-computer has been on the brink (finally back on line), send Fitness Club balance due statements, arrange Liam's schedule, operate on Brendan's stuffed dog (don't ask), set up Jack's evaluation, Clancy-oh poor Clancy-what to do with our 14 year old dog, return business and personal phone calls, address the new ANT problem in the kitchen, clean, change, feed, wash, work, go, go, go!!!!!! ARGGGGGGGG!!!! My head is either going to explode or I am just going to just breakdown and CRY!!!!

This is all running through my head as I am running on the treadmill at 6am this morning---then, all of a sudden, POOF! It hits me--the mantra one of my best friends, Peggy, shared with me not so long ago..."Settle your mind so you can listen to your heart". Great advise and I decided for 30 minutes, as I was running, to take it, I worked at "settling" my mind so I could "listen" to my heart.
What happened? Well, it's really quite amazing what can happen when you allow yourself to let go and settle down. I found peace among many other amazing things-true mental clarity (is it the run or the mantra?-that's for another blog-when Jacqui is back in business!).

So now I am HERE in the NOW and asking everyone who may be reading, please, follow the advice my dear friend offers ..."SETTLE YOUR MIND SO YOU CAN LISTEN TO YOUR HEART" and for right now, if only for today, LIVE IN THE NOW.

You may be pleasantly surprised by what you find.

Keebler Elves????????

Was it the Keebler Elves who worked through the night, yes I know all about Santa's elves....In any event, I was MIA this weekend for Strength for Life but, the Commack PTI (Personal Training Institute) took the ball and ran with their Train the Trainer Day - collecting $1335 for Strength for Life. Thank you Jess Zimbler and her mighty staff, who really took a beating.

For those of you who have not read about 'Train the Trainer' the clients donate a minimum of $25 to workout the trainer of their choice on 3 exercises. So let's think about this, as a client you hate chins, and your trainer Alyssa (fictitious ?) always has chins in your routine. Somehow I believe you would want to see Alyssa doing body weight chins - and perhaps add a 30 lb weight belt to her for one or two reps. Worth $25 - I think so - the fact the your $25 is going to assist cancer patients be stronger - definitely!

$1335 is an awesome amount - thank you Commack trainers, clients and administrators for all your hard work. There is a little healthy competition between facilities to raise the most $$$ for Strength for Life, Commack you raised the bar high, high, high!

Stay tuned!

Still growing up to $1400

and still growing.....

Leap for Life!

So Debbie, what have you gotten me into now? As I arrived at her house for a day of "no kids" (except Jack - who was asleep) she presented me with an article about "Leap for Life." "LI Attorney Leaps for American Cancer Society" - Rick Collins raised more than $13,500 for ACS.

Debbie us so excited about this attorney, author of the "Alpha Male Challenge" (hmmmm), bodybuilder and defender of steroid use (what???), lecturer, magazine columnist - yada yada yada. I allowed her to go on, took the article to read and we went to work on the wellness weekend.

So, shame on me - let us not be judgemental! We met with Rick Collins today, what Debbie was able to extract from reading his web site, his bio etc, I was presented with in person. A gentleman, articulate as any I have heard, passionate about health, fitness and nutrition and willing to spend an hour or more of his time with Strength for Life.

His opening statement (isn't that like a lawyer) was how an individual is in control of what they eat and what they do! Especially during disease (dis-ease) that uncontrollable aspect that presents itself - we do have control of some aspects of our life. Evelyn Knapp (the reason for Strength for Life) said that exercise gave her a sense of control in an uncontrollable situation.

Debbie ran to buy the book - sold out in Border's, Commack. I have not read the book, I am interested in reading the book now after meeting Rick. I have looked through the table of contents - no quiche in there but there is cilantro! There are wonderful recipes for food and there is a full recipe for fitness! There is information that I recognize GAS - not as in flatulence - as in the General Adaptation Syndrome - our body's reaction to stress. The excerpts are inviting - you will want to run out (like Debbie) and buy this book. It covers it all diet, exercise and ATTITUDE!

Thank you, Rick Collins! We are gaining altitude for the Strength for Life Leap!

Please take the time and visit Rick's web site - I could not begin to add his credentials to this blog. www.rickcollins.com - see the link

Cedar Beach Triathlon

This is the third annual Cedar Beach Triathlon in Miller Place, New York and there were three athletes donning our Strength for Life uniforms. Jess Swanson, our Iron Man pictured on the website placed second in her age group - Go Girl! Michele Fernandez and Denise Chapman joined Maggie Fields in a relay this year and they had a great time - both in enjoyment and finishing time. Michele, Denise and Maggie are all from PTI Smithtown.

Our first experience at Cedar Beach, and the first annual triathlon, was to show our support for Denise who participated then. In January 2007 Denise was a client at Personal Training Institute working very hard. Both Michele and I trained Denise and shortly after January 1st, I asked her for her fitness goal for the year. Perplexed, she shared that she never really thought of one. After consideration, she said she wanted to compete in a triathlon. In May 2007, she participated in a rookie tri, the swim was in a pool and the distances were short. She completed it and looked for other opportunities. Denise started training and finished the Cedar Beach Triathlon in October 2007 at 2:11. That year the Cedar Beach Triathlon was a 3/4 mile swim; 17 mile bike and 5K run. What an outstanding accomplishment, and we were very proud.

I suppose the moral of this story is that one simple question started a chain of events, and successes.

Today, I met an triathlete at the race who could not compete due to some present health issues. This woman has had breast cancer and is interested in supporting Strength for Life after hearing about who we are, what we do, and more importantly that every dollar raised is used for the program.

In addition, a gentlemen approached Jess Swanson and asked about her uniform, she told him about Strength for Life and he was very interested as a cancer survivor and doctor. The opportunities are out there, thank you for putting us in their way!

"Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises." Demosthenes

Postscript
Congratulations Justin for completing the Chicago Marathon in 3:45; a 8:35 minute pace. Justin is the franchise co-owner of the Personal Training Institute in Smithtown running his first full marathon. Justin raised money for the Lupus Foundation, next time maybe he will share the wealth with Strength for Life.

Amityville Acupuncture & SPOHNC

If you did not read the previous blog on SPOHNC, please do so. Tonight we met with the Syosset group and we were well received by all. Men, 6 - 8 of them willing to attend our classes - be still my heart - a first! This group was as wonderful and welcoming as the Stony Brook support group. Kudos for SPOHNC.

And to make the evening better, we met the founder Nancy Leupold who shared ideas and gave us some hints to success. Thank you, Nancy for you kindness and sage advice.

From Amityville Acupuncture -
please read the following bio of Erin Hume taken from http://www.amityvilleacupuncture.com/

A native of Copiague, New York, Erin moved to San Diego, California where she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Chinese Herbology from the renowned Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Having studied with some of the most respected faculty in the country, she also received clinical training at the prestigious Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China.

From San Diego, she relocated when her husband, a Naval officer, was stationed in Nashville, Tennessee. Erin opened and operated a very successful practice in Nashville, where she treated professional athletes such as the NFL Tennessee Titans and NHL Nashville Predators.

Now, back on Long Island Erin looks forward to bringing all of her knowledge and skills in wholistic medicine to Amityville. She continues to work with many professional athletes including the NFL New York Jets. She also is a professor at The New York College of Health Professions teaching acupuncture and massage.

At Amityville Acupuncture & Wellness, the aim is to treat the root imbalance, or causative factor, not simply the symptom. Erin is committed to treating her patients with the utmost care and concern. Amityville Acupuncture & Wellness offers a full granular pharmacy to provide patients not only the best care, but custom herbal formulas.

Erin was kind enough to invite Debbie and I to speak at her Breast Cancer meeting which she holds the second Thursday of each month. Again the entire staff was warm and welcoming - as was this location. Please give the website your attention - Erin has so much to offer and so many ways to help any condition you may suffer from.

So Thursday, October 8th was a very productive day for Strength for Life - we made many contacts, met many wonderful people and succeeded in spreading the word.

A postscript - this morning I awoke and was thinking about this blog I did in a hurry late last night. My thought was that the title "staff" at Amityville Acupuncture did not suit the feelings I encountered - it was more like "family". Well tonight (a day later) in a conversation with Debbie about Erin and her team - lo and behold it is her family - her mother and grandmother were a part of that warm embracing feeling at the center. One more reason for you to visit Amityville Acupuncture, not everyone was biological family - but you would never know.

Navel Expo?

We have our fingers crossed for the opportunity to be involved in the Navel Expo. Personal Training Institute will be an exhibitor and Jess Swanson (Director of Education) will be a speaker on November 1, 2009, at the Huntington Hilton.

Alex Lubarsky is considering allowing Strength for Life to be represented at the Navel Expo to meet and greet many powerful wellness/fitness practitioners. The doors could fly open with this opportunity since, historically, everyone believes we are on the right track.

"Believe and it shall be yours." We so believe!

Street Fairs, Chain Letters...Word of Mouth

The idea is to spread the word. Please do not ever send me a chain letter and tell me to forward it to my friends .... I wouldn't have any if I forwarded all those chain letters - (some with very good intentions). If I chose to leave them unopened for the time that I had available, they would stress me that they were unopened. If I take the moment when they are received, I wouldn't have another available moment.

My idea is to talk to others, share your thoughts. It is amazing that when you open up your heart so many things are opened up to you. When you choose to read this blog, or any other - it is when you have a moment and are inclined to share it with us. A simple mention, by you, at the right time and to the right person could open doors that we have been trying to breakdown. I have said that we feel "shameless" at times, but shameless for a cause which takes the shame out of the equation.

Just keep us in mind and you may be the person who changes the course in an instant. I try to remember that "in an instant, life could change" just as easily for the better than worse.

If we live by the law of attraction - it will be for the better.

Runes - anyone?

Are you thinking "oh my God" she's lost it! Trust me, I have not lost it. Few people today have heard of the word "Runes", followers of J. J Tolkien might. It is an ancient alphabetical script, with each letter possessing a meaningful name as well as a signifying sound. Runes were employed for legal documents, for writing poetry, for inscriptions and divination, yet never evolved as a spoken language.

I have adopted "consulting the oracle" as they call it - to help direct my attention. But let me share, there are times when I need a little direction and you select a Rune (it's a tile with a letter) upside down or reversed - not usually a good sign. Today I selected a rune that is a straight vertical line - can not be reversed - the gist of this rune is "submit and be still, for what you are experiencing is not necessarily the result of your actions or habits, but rather rises from conditions about which you can do nothing. What has been full must empty, what has increased must decrease. To surrender is to display courage and wisdom."

Alright, what do I do with that direction!

I will tell you, there are times that things just take a life of their own. Strength for Life is there right now. Debbie and I have certainly put it out there, but it is being received in abundance. Thank you Lord - I have been reminded to say, we are grateful for the support we are receiving, the interest that has been stirred and the possibilities that are ahead.

It is so "not the norm" that someone approaches us, we feel "shameless" lately, (our new mantra), but Darren Neuberger has been following our path for sometime and has shown an interest in promoting Strength for Life in Canada. Darren Neuberger is a cancer survivor with a background in fitness. Please read his bio from facebook:

Darren Neuberger is a man on a mission. Mr.Neuberger was diagnosed with acute leukemia on August 5, 2003 and after 2 years straight of treatment , which entailed 5 months as an inpatient in the hospital, over 600 chemo treatments, 2 weeks of brain radiation, 1 ALL INCLUSIVE trip to I.C.U. and over 17 units of blood, Darren is coming up 3 years post treatment and still showing no evidence of disease! Mr. Neuberger's speeches are not only motivational, inspiring and positive, he also has a knack for showing a side to cancer that most will not associate to the disease, and that is humor. Darren came face to face with his mortality at the young age of 34 and his passion and mission is to let others know that we can overcome obstacles and when life throws us lemons, we can turn it into wine!!

National, International - the possibilities are endless! Just sit a be quite and allow it to happen - that possibility is very difficult. But we, Strength for Life, have the conviction and the faith to allow it take the course it may - for the moment.

Debbie and I know that what we offer is special to cancer patients and survivors, and we know that what we receive is the greatest gift - seeing the organization grow to help countless others (as Evelyn did). But our joy is meeting each individual and listening to their story and seeing their growth and strength prevail.

Long winded? Sorry - I am sitting, submitting and being still - aren't I.

Thank you for reading our blog - for supporting our cause and for spreading the word! When you, all, have done that work - I can really sit and be still!

See Dee Run

http://www.deesrun.com

See Dee Run - my child, running the Philadelphia 1/2 marathon in November for Strength for Life. Her goal is to raise $5000 for Strength for Life - at $300 per participant, for the Wellness Weekend, she is planning to sponsor a weekend on her own.

Dee (aka Domenica) is running in memory of her cousin Emily Ann Higgins, who lost her life, tragically, at 16 years old in June. Running is like prayer, those who engage in running will understand what I am talking about. Your mind is clear, you allow yourself the quiet time to open your heart and just be - you and the steps and your breathe.

Please consider $1.oo a mile donation for Strength for Life, for Dee and in memory of Emily.

Thank you.

SCORE!

Not a dating service, but a great name for one...so the conversation went at our business plan meeting with Michael and Barry. Our meeting was very informative, perhaps our "deer in the headlight" looks truly portrayed a moment or two...but we got it!

Debbie and I walked away with "the secret" to success, it's direction - plain and simple. This is just an affirmation of what was already known to us, hence the meeting with SCORE. We needed the help and promised support of Barry and Michael, in their light-hearted way,to give us the next push forward. Just a simple comment that they believed we would be successful was defining.

Wednesday, September 23 was a great day for us, busy but productive.

In the evening we spoke at the Breast Cancer HELP support group, it is amazing how one room can hold so many warm and open minded women. I do believe we exceeded our quota for a class on the South Shore to be held either on Monday or Thursday evening (tbd).

Between yesterday and today - five offers to help us in a variety of ways. Yoga teachers, massage therapists, personal trainers and survivors with varied backgrounds. All support and assistance to help promote Strength for Life is appreciated.

And of course financial help - thank you Cheryl for sponsoring a survivor for the Wellness Weekend! We mentioned that $300 sponsors one cancer patient/survivor - and we received the first donation yesterday.

The Law of Karma or Cause and Effect- Every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in like kind....what we sow is what we reap. And when we choose actions that bring happiness and success to others, the fruit of our karma is happiness and success.*

Breast Cancer Help Support Group

We are speaking to the members of the "Breast Cancer Help" Support Group on Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00, and hope that we will gain the necessary four person limit to start the class at the Drew Patrick Spa. Two members of this group have been driving across the Island to attend the St. James class and we would like to begin in Bay Shore for them and others.

If you do not know anything about "Breast Cancer Help", please read the following:

Breast Cancer Help, Inc. is a not-for-profit grass roots organization with a focus on action and advocacy to eradicate breast cancer. Founded in 1994 by Lorraine Pace, a breast cancer survivor, and Father Thomas Arnao, the group promotes education and awareness of breast cancer issues on Long Island and elsewhere in New York State. Pace was also the founder of the West Islip breast cancer mapping project, which pinpointed breast cancer clusters. This original mapping project, which spearheaded the breast cancer environmental movement, has now spread to other parts of New York, the U.S. and abroad.

Since its inception, Breast Cancer Help, Inc. has taken a multi-pronged approach to combating breast cancer on Long Island. The organization has worked to mobilize citizens into breast cancer coalitions leading to breast cancer mapping projects; worked to bring cancer education into our schools; served as advocates to change state and local laws to preserve our environment; and worked to strengthen the rights of breast cancer patients. Breast Cancer Help has also worked to ensure that Long Islanders have access to the best possible medical diagnosis and care through the purchase of radiosurgery equipment and lease of a digital mammography unit at Stony Brook University Hospital.

In March of 2003, Breast Cancer Help opened its Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center. The Center represented a partnership between Breast Cancer Help, Inc. and the Village of Lindenhurst, a municipal government with a long history of support of grassroots efforts to find the causes and a cure for breast cancer. The goal of the Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center is to provide increased cancer awareness to promote early detection, while providing patients and survivors with needed support.

Another wonderful organization that deserves our support.

Suzanne Somers, Patrick Swayze and Chemotherapy

Suzanne Somers thinks Patrick Swayze could have been alive today if he would have used alternative methods to treat his pancreatic cancer instead of chemotherapy.

The former "Three's Company" star, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1991 and rejected chemotherapy in favor of natural treatments, reportedly told Toronto-based columnist Shinan Govani that it was Swayze's chemotherapy treatments, not pancreatic cancer, that ended his life prematurely.

"They took this beautiful man and they basically put poison in him," she reportedly said. "Why couldn't they have built him up nutritionally and gotten rid of the toxins in his body? I hate to be this controversial. I'm a singer-dancer-comedienne. But we have an epidemic going on, and I have to say it."

Wow! I know so many survivors and chemotherapy may be the reason they are still with us. Yes, it is poison but for a reason! Who are we to judge the choices that others decide regarding their life.

Make yourself as strong as you can with exercise, nutrition and by following the advise of your trusted medical team. Let us focus on the positive medical advances and not point fingers at what is unknown.

Ovarian Cancer

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month.

Ovarian Cancer is one of the most deadly of women's cancers. Each year, approximately 21,500 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. This year, approximately 15,500 women will die in the United States from ovarian cancer. Many women don't seek help until the disease has begun to spread, but if detected at its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is more than 93%. Recent research suggests that together the four symptoms of: bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly and urinary urgency or frequency may be associated with ovarian cancer.

With awareness comes responsibility....
responsibility to
act.

Whether it your prostate, ovarian, breast, head, neck or oral cancer awareness month- do not delay - act!

Peripheral Neuropathy

To address a question asked at the SPOHNC meeting last week on peripheral neuropathy, a common side effect of chemotherapy. This, generally, is not a reason to avoid exercise. Caution is always advised on balance issues with neuropathy, so perhaps stationary biking is a better choice than the treadmill (during a painful or severe episode), but for those that can tolerate it - exercise is best.

As one who has suffered from chronic peripheral neuropathy, I found strengthening the leg, hip and ankle muscles, as well as the core muscles helped prevent the risk of falling and prevented injury.

One area that you should be very concious of - is picking up your foot while walking. Be mindful not to drag the foot, use your muscles to lift the foot off the floor and then plant it into a step.

If you invest in a heart rate monitor, you will see that just by doing this small mindful action - your heart rate increases and you will burn more calories. Another instant boost to increase your heart rate, pull in your abdominal muscles - that in itself burns more calories. Two very simple ways to strengthen muscles and burn additional calories. Pay attention to all of your activities, use good posture and get the most out of everything you do.

September is Prostate Awareness Month

In a 14 year analysis of 47,620 male health professionals, researchers concluded that regular vigorous exercise could help reduce the chances of suffering from prostate cancer and also slow the progression of the disease in those who have it.

Since I woke up to this news story - I thought I would share it with you. For some of you this information is elementary, however, HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) was a new term for me.

Outside of skin cancers, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer to affect American males. It is also the third leading cause of death from cancer in male cancer patients.

HIFU is a state-of-the-art technology utilizing the power of ultrasound to destroy deep seated prostate tissue without affecting the surrounding healthy tissue. The HIFU energy is focused sharply from the transducer surface to the targeted tissue in the prostate. Temperature is elevated in the targeted tissue up to 90 degrees C within one second causing cell death. The therapy consists of placing HIFU lesions (each requiring only a few seconds to create) side-by-side until the entire prostate gland has been "painted" with HIFU energy. HIFU, available in Canada and the UK, is only approved by the FDA for investigational use within the United States.

Prostate cancer can often be found early by testing the amount of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in your blood. Another way prostate cancer is found early is when the doctor does a digital rectal exam (DRE). You should talk to your doctor about whether or not you want to be tested.

What have you done today?

You know that you should be incorporating exercise into every day - whether it is the 30 minute walk, or your strength training exercises on non-consecutive days. As Nike says - Just Do It! Put your sneakers/walking shoes on and go outside, on the treadmill or wherever and just do it!

*Nike (Greek Νίκη pronounced [níːkɛː]), the Greek goddess of victory; it is also based on Egyptian usage of "strength", "victory" -nakht. * from wikipedia

Victory, Triumph, Conquest !

Research has shown that regular physical activity helps reduce the risk of recurrence of breast cancer and colon cancer, and slows the advance of prostate cancer. Reason enough to put on those shoes and get out and walk?

SPOHNC

Last night, Debbie and I met with a wonderful group at SPOHNC, Support for People with Oral, Head and Neck Cancer at Stony Brook University Medical Center - Cancer Center. Founded 19 years ago by oral cancer survivor Nancy Leupold, Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer has been both a resource and inspiration for survivors and patients throughout the country. SPOHNC is a patient-directed self-help organization dedicated to raising awareness and meeting the needs of oral, head and neck cancer patients. What started as a single support group at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, has now grown to 90 SPOHNC chapters throughout the United States

“People diagnosed with oral, head and neck cancer are often overwhelmed because it is not a well-known disease,” said Mary Ann Caputo, current outreach administrator and soon to be executive director of SPOHNC. “SPOHNC and its outreach programs offer support and encouragement through their chapters and through its National Survivor Volunteer Network.

Although head, neck and oral cancer is new to us at Strength for Life, our exercise regime can benefit everyone. Of course, we can add some specific exercises to strengthen the neck and shoulder area, but all-around strength and endurance is paramount in cancer recovery and wellness. We look forward to having this group join us at the Wellness Weekend in November. Thank you, Dennis, for inviting us to speak at your intimate support meeting.

As always, medical clearance is necessary to participate.

AHA!

When I worked for hospice as a volunteer, the volunteer coordinator told me that the job was "uplifting".

I recently saw an article that asked for feedback on the question "was cancer a gift?".

I remember talking to wonderful volunteers that had been given a new outlook on life after they were diagnosed with cancer - putting everything into perspective. What I have learned is to trust that twinge of intuition, not furl my brow (creating more wrinkles) because the AHA moment does come.

Working at hospice was absolutely rewarding, especially when faced with the unthinkable - an OMG how will I have the strength moment- but you receive it and it is uplifting. Cancer a gift, I can't say, but I do understand having everything in life put into perspective - and that is a gift. I have not read the outcome of that question, what I can see is the immeasurable strength that some individuals dealing with cancer are given. That is another OMG how do they have the fortitude? Trust, Faith!

One of my very favorite quotes "believe you have received it - and it will be yours!"

A bit personal today - just had to share!

Medical Advisory Board

Thank you Carol Kur, co-founder of Personal Training Institute, for accepting a position on our Medical Advisory Board. The role of nutrition is counterpart with exercise in the recovery of cancer patients and lending us your expertise is greatly appreciated. Strength for Life has always had your support, Carol, because of your personal relationship with Evelyn and this role is evidence of that. Exercise and Nutrition - a novel idea - one, you and Evelyn combined years ago. Thank you on so many levels!

You join Dr.Richard Byrnes, Oncologist-Radiologist, who has opened doors for our new organization by his support alone.

Oprah said:

Success is when preparation meets opportunity! My life was once more about the preparation than the moment; now I am jumping on every opportunity - still don't seem to be in sync. I trust it will come!

To quote from Anthony Robbins, "I decided that somehow I must contribute in some way that would live on long after I was gone." I, too, believe that; and I do hope that Strength for Life is a part of Evelyn Knapp's contribution living past her life.

Labor Day - Food for Thought

Train the Trainer at Personal Training Institute in the month of October. For a donation you can kick the butt of your trainers - make them sweat, see the tears, hear the groans - you did a great job! All proceeds are earmarked for our Wellness Weekend. Last year we raised $6400 in one hour at all the participating facilities, we can bring this fundraiser outside of PTI - all suggestions are welcome.

Saturday, September 5, 2009

My virgin blog! - Strength for Life is a not for profit organization offering free exercise classes for cancer patients/survivors. Our newest venture is a free Wellness Weekend for the same, to take place in November '09. A mere $300 will sponsor a cancer survivor/patient to this informative weekend where they will attend up to 4 classes - strength training with bands, balls and mats; tai chi; yoga; meditation; a motivational speaker; and/or a nutritional seminar. As in our classes we will also provide the bands, balls and mats so these participants can continue their exercise prescription at home - or following with our 8 week class schedule. Meals and lodgings will be paid by Strength for Life.

Since we are still a very new not for profit - we ask that you spread the word, check out our website at http://www.strengthforlifeny.org/ and consider donating time, sponsoring an event, or a part of this weekend - tee shirts and the like.

In addition, athletes - use your participation in an event to assist us. Through active.com and our website you can set up a home page for donations. Go to the "donate" page, "become a fundraiser" and personalize your page.

Strength for Life was founded in memory of Evelyn Knapp, an exercise physiologist, co-founder of Personal Training Institute and an avid runner. Evelyn lost her battle with breast cancer in 2005 at 40 years old; Evelyn said exercise gave her a sense of control in an uncontrollable situation. Strength For Life is our answer to her vision.
