The 4th Annual Evelyn Knapp “Run to Remember” : A Recap

Oh what a day it was, record cold temps, wind blasting in the open fields at 30+mph and the domino effect it presented. Thank you to the 90 “day of race’ registrants for waking up, feeling the conditions and deciding to come out to support Strength for Life and run. Record pre-registrants for the walk and run at 532 – kudos to you all – especially since 200 registered this last week knowing the weekly forecast.

This was an incredible 4th Year event – the unofficial proceeds top $20000 – that goes a long way to help us with the FREE programs Strength for Life offers. With that incredible success there needs to be many many thanks shared.

Our sponsors – STARS Rehabilitation of East Meadow, Mather Hospital, Leon Chiropractic, North Suffolk Surgical, Hyatt Windwatch, Cassone Leasing, The Suffolk County Emerald Society Sal Agostinelli Baseball, Clayton Funeral Home.  Please visit our website www.strengthforlifeny.org for links to each sponsor’s website.  They deserve our patronage.

Our ‘inkind’ sponsors – Hint Water, Ginny Bakes, Modern Bakeries, Runner’s Edge, Sayville Running Shop, Popei’s Deer Park, Waterzooi, Cheesecake Factory, Croxley Ale House for products, prizes and gift raffles.

Our survivor fundraisers who went all out and collected over $7000. Our top fundraiser, Maryann Graham of Carle Place raised $2550 from friends and co-workers – that was incredible.  Thank you! In addition, with our sincere appreciation to Annette Deluca Gerani, Roseann Karasavas, Tina Kirsimae, Mattia Terranova, Marianne Walz.

And Denise Elf-Chapman, who has been a supporter from day one has matching contributions still coming. We had a lot of fun with the competitive nature of the Elf- Chapman family – with each additional donation outdoing the last.

And our friend, Harsha Padmanabhan, who has a personal success story of rehabilitation walked the walk proudly and had a host of New Jersey donors. Kudos!

The Green Vale Pacers, a gift since our inaugural run raised $1300 this year with an variety of fundraising events; and for the second year our youngest fundraiser Emma Thode who also raised $500 +, a stack of singles so thick – they were calling me ‘money bags’.

We were helped with promotions from Emma’s Dad Jeremy who had a score of soccer girls ready to help and run and he put it out to all the school teams.  Randstad, a recruiting company, shared our event with their clients to encourage corporate wellness and led by example with a large group of runners and walkers.  Cross Fit, Yaphank had their team training for a 5k run and promoted it throughout their facility.  Cross Fit shirts were emblazoned at the run.

So what havoc did the weather cause, the winds made it impossible for the heated tent, signage and even the timing clock to be erected.  The domino effect delayed the set of the pre-reg and packet pickup and the food.  We were using trucks to block the wind and the picnic tables in lieu of our ‘feather light’ folding tables.

Although we carefully mapped out an extension of the course to make it a 3.15 length – the chalk/paint lined arrows were obliterated and the front runners made a turn onto the established course and completely missed the extension.  At that point it was too late. The weather took a toll on our volunteers who may have been able to divert and omit the error – but it did not happen that way.  Our sincerest apologies to all who intended on completing a full 5k, the timing company adjusted the pace to reflect the shorter distance.  Next year the moat will be back in play and the original 5K course will be re-established.

Evelyn was known to push people out of their comfort zones – and that was experienced yesterday on many levels.

And special thanks to all the volunteers who froze their fingers, toes,  and other body parts so this run could take off!!! You 're the best!  We definitely could not have done it without your patience and efforts!!

Another special shout (seems like an inappropriate choice of words) out to the Choir from Holy Family; the Brownie Troop who had a 'zumba' warm up for the fun run and our friend Penni Niles who definitely warmed up the crowd pre-race, and our friend Donna Nesturek of Sound Healing Pathways for the interactive drum circle.  Donna came for the warm up and stayed for the whole event - seeing how the drum sounds helped calm the effects of the weather.

So many people to thank!  Blessings to all for a Wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thank you all for your continued support, we are able to help many more cancer patients/survivors challenge themselves and grow stronger with the money raised.

4th Annual Evelyn Knapp "Run to Remember"

 Top Male finisher 2012

Please join us on November 24th as we celebrate our 4th Annual Evelyn Knapp "Run to Remember" and 2nd Annual Wellness Walk at Sunken Meadow State Park.  There is something 'active' for your whole family, a kid's fun run, boardwalk 'walk', and challenging trail run.  The proceeds go directly to the Strength for Life programs of providing FREE exercise classes and wellness retreats to cancer patients/survivors on Long Island.

As you may know, Strength for Life was formed in memory of Evelyn Knapp, an exercise physiologist who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2005. During treatment she experienced first hand the benefits of exercise in relieving many of the side effects of the treatment.  She was often heard saying "exercise gave her a sense of control in a situation that was out of control." At that time the protocol for cancer patients was "bed rest is best." It was not until 2010 that the American College of Sports Medicine changed their guidelines to "AVOID INACTIVITY".  Since 2010, then have been numerous studies on the benefits of exercise in treatment and recovery.

The initial studies were on the benefits of aerobic (cardio) exercise, now there are more on resistance training and flexibility.  Strength for Life was organized in 2007 to share Evelyn's vision to educate cancer patients on the vast benefits of adding exercise into their treatment plan. Strength for Life began offering strength training classes and wanted them to be accessible to many so - we decided to seek donated space to hold a group class and travel to an area nearer the clients wanting to participate. In 2009 we began offering wellness retreats to introduce various modalites of exercise to be added to the treatment plan - such as yoga and tai chi, along with an introduction by Doctors of Osteopathic and Naturopathic Medicine on complementary therapies.  The wellness retreats are still evolving, we have had art therapy, writing therapy, meditation and reiki and remain open to offer other therapies and nutrition information.

Please visit our website at www.strengthforlifeNY.org for more information on the class locations and retreats.

Strength for Life relies on our fundraising efforts to afford these programs at no cost to survivors.  The upcoming run is our favorite event because it is in Evelyn's name...she was an avid runner and Sunken Meadow was her favorite course.

There are many ways to help us help others, joining us for this event is one, have a race day tee shirt dedication ($25) for a loved one or simply donate through our website.  Any amount helps.

You can choose to support one of our walkers or runners raising funds for Strength for Life.  We have an army of angels helping us help others.

We lost a dear friend - Rebecca Keenan

Our first wellness retreat 2009 !!!

Rebecca was Strength for Life’s First “Inspire” honoree at the 2012 Survivor Recognition Dinner. We chose three extraordinary survivors one for each characteristic of our motto..

"Inspire, Strengthen and Empower"

"INSPIRE" - to live in spirit, no one we know defines this word better than Rebecca Keenan...We met Rebecca at our first wellness retreat in 2009......as the day unfolded Rebecca shared her story-she was 8 months pregnant when she was diagnosed...with a newborn , a 4 year old and a 7 year old to care for , Rebecca started on her breast cancer journey....since the first meeting and now 4 years later she never displays anything other than good, pure, positive thoughts and SMILES! She is always smiling!! I read something that she wrote recently and it said "what really matters is that we all smile and laugh a lot!"...She is an amazing person and an unbelievable mom, throughout her treatment she manages to host birthday parties, schedule playdates and basically be supermom!...Her faith has been something that has always stood out, her trust in the Lord and in her journey is awe inspiring....one last thing to mention, Rebecca completed this past year Evelyn Knapp's 5K 'Run to Remember' , this is no easy task, with the infamous Cardiac Hill and Snake Hill as part of our course this didn't stop or scare off Rebecca and she came through that finish line a true winner...."

2011 "Run to Remember"

The Fairy Godmother at Stony Brook University, 2013,
there to celebrate a pediatric cancer patient 'ringing the bell'
which means the end of their chemo!!!  And she shared her love for our survivors.

Rebecca was there for a class always trying to do whatever she could to stay strong!!!
God Bless You, Rebecca!!!

Navel Expo Quick Review -

N utrition
A esthetics
V itality
E fficacy
L ife

As many of you know I spent the last two days with our friend Alex Lubarsky at the Navel Expo. If you did not attend - mark your calendars for next year - May and November and watch for notices.

The presenters were incredible - difficult to decide where to spend each hour. The New "Richard Linchitz Cancer Free Mastermind" on Saturday was a tease and made you come back on Sunday for the day.

My draw for the Saturday event was Fred Eichorn of the National Cancer Research Foundation and his product "cellect" that I have always heard the wonders of.

But then I met the others, some I had no information on.

Dr. Sollazzo, Aging Alternatives, right here is Smithtown, so open with his treatments options - combining traditional and alternative therapies... Never heard of Chemo Sensitivity Testing and the lab in Texas - Caris.

Then there was Sylvie Beljanski & John Hall speaking of "Rauwolfia & Pao Extracts" .

Joyce O'Brien with her incredible own survival story.

Our good friend Dr. Karen Barbosa, breast surgeon - who tops Dr. Phil in telling it 'like it is'. Kudos Dr. Barbosa for being the only one to talk about exercise during treatment and recovery.

And more....on Saturday - then there was Sunday....

Of course I repeated some of the same 'extended' presentations - was hypnotized by Dr. Kazi Anam and learned how to achieve self hypnotism.

Learned of a wonderful organic restaurant in Hicksville "West East Bistro."

And saw the incredible transformation of Dr. Jeffry Life - from unhealthy at 59 to superstar at 75...you've seen him in ads - abs cut to perfection.

Did I tease you enough???
Check out the line up at Navel Expo... and make sure you attend 2014!!!
