Natural Awakenings.......

Even the name is appealing...Strength for Life was featured in the January 2010 issue of the Long Island Edition (www.naturalawakeningsli.com). We met Rachel Sokol at the Navel Expo this fall (Nutrition, Aesthestics, Vitality, Efficacy, Life)and she saw the need to share our story to more Long Islanders. As you know we offer free exercise classes and wellness weekends to cancer patients/survivors and our intent is to reach out and educate about the benefits of exercise through recovery. At a time when the last thing you want to do is exercise - it can be the thing that makes you feel the best.

The next NAVEL (Wellness) Expo will be held May 2, 2010 at the Huntington Hilton and it is worth your visit - so many incredible lectures, new products and the opportunity to meet practitioners of both integrative and alternative medicine. The cost is $10 for an all day pass - money well spent for the education you will receive.

How much exercise is enough?

I just read an article regarding this question, of course it is all relative to what you want to accomplish and what your present state of fitness is.

"The answer, according to a study published in this month’s British Journal of Sports Medicine: a mere 20 minutes a week of any physical activity, whether sports, walking, gardening or even housecleaning, the last not usually associated with bringing out the sunshine. The researchers found that more activity conferred more mental-health benefits and that “participation in vigorous sports activities” tended to be the “most beneficial for mental health.” But their overall conclusion was that being active for as little as 20 minutes a week is sufficient, if your specific goal is mental health."

Well now, although 20 minutes is not much for the most of us - if you have been sedentary for any reason - knowing that 20 minutes should boost your mental health is promising. For the majority of us I would say - let us increase our exercise time by 20 minutes a week. Short bursts, one session - however you choose but just add that 20 minutes more in to your schedule. You have all read, park your car far away from the store/work; take the steps; walk around the block; walk your dog.....so many easy ways to incorporate another 20 minutes into your week. I believe that it has been said that if you perform a new activity for 21 days - it becomes a habit - well if I say "20 minutes" 21 times - will you do it?

I suppose I am looking for company as I am adding in more cardio to my week. I have a new Heart Rate monitor that is driving me crazy because according to it - it is never enough (it wants me to exercise for 3:55:00 this week). In addition, I have registered for the Hudson River Bike Tour/Ride in July - planning on 66 miles and then a 100 mile ride in August; and I am trying to regain my appreciation for running. Operative word - TRYING to regain. Join me, please!

You remember - misery loves company - lets put a spin on it - success loves company too!

PS - for anyone who is not up to the challenge - my mother, 93 years old has a pedometer and walked 2000 steps yesterday. Granted we dangle Ben and Jerry's as her reward - but she has increased her number exponentially - and her goal is 5000.

Vacation......

I was away for a week in Florida and on catch up for the last week, Yes - you remember, record breaking cold temperatures in Florida - that was the week I chose to go. At the airport, my friend said that it was predicted to be cold - and I replied "at least there will be no snow around". This is when the Lord decides to remind me of His sense of humor. Oh yes, we were in Orlando - and there was snow! Do you know about the sense of humor the Lord has?...because I am reminded of it on more occasions than I care to remember, and please learn from me - you really do not need some of those lessons.

So I am back and Debbie has been working diligently, while I have not! The newsletter has been revamped and volume 2 will soon to be in your email. (If you know that we do not have your email address, please complete the contact page on our website and you will be added to the list).

In addition, to completing the email, Debbie has locked in a "gala" date and a sky dive date. There are more surprises but - I will allow you to be surprised. We are still frustrated with "space issues" but persevering.

"When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it - but all that had gone before." Jacob Riis

Goals vs. Resolutions......

Similar but not the same. I have been in the habit of asking clients in January for their fitness goal for the year, most never have an answer but with some thought will come up with one. I have seen all those goals achieved.

Now resolutions, on the other hand, are not realized as often. HHhmmm!!!

You may remember an archived blog about the Cedarbeach Triathlon and the story about a dear friend who achieved her new year's goal, she is always the success story that comes to mind. Clearly when I asked her for a goal she had not one idea - and then decided that her goal was to complete a triathlon. Not a runner at all, not a biker at all - but she was a swimmer. She worked very hard!- and she achieved more than she envisioned. Kudos Denise!

As always, not the first to think about this - I googled exactly this "goals vs resolutions" and came up with a very nice article by Marie Disbrow -

We share similar ideas in planning - I am a "baby step" planner - set yourself up for success!

Eat the Frog............

Yes, yes I borrowed this from a "Walk the Talk" email and I suggest you subscribe they are quite inspirational.

In any event, it was Mark Twain who said if the first thing you do each morning is eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day.

I thought is was a fitting in the beginning of January to address this - how can we accomplish all the things we want???

answer..."eat the frog".... and if there are two frogs? ...eat the ugly one first!

It is not only a chuckle, it is sage advice. Prioritize and act!

May you accomplish all you want in 2010!
