Change and control...........

"Coming to terms with the parts of a change that you cannot control is critical to being successful. The most constructive thing you can do with No Control factors during change is:
1. Recognize they exist,
2. See them for what they're worth,
3. Let them go."

One week later...............

Yes, so many of you may know - I lost my voice this week - totally lost it and I suppose the brain/finger receptors were not on board either - hence no blog this week!

We had our second wellness weekend yesterday, this one was designated for SPOHNC, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Islip - many a deep breath was taken. The day was not without last minute changes....but in reality it all worked out. I am a firm believer that when the intent is pure - the universe takes over and all is well!.

Deep breath number one: The evening guest speaker, Dr. Carfora realized that her daughter's junior prom and pre prom party (at her house)was Saturday night....shift the day's events - Dr. Carfora will speak at breakfast. For those that were there - she literally walked in, we ripped her coat off and she was presenting with passion. Her information is always so enlightening, as a DO, she understands how to address the whole person - simply not the disease itself. Water in plastic bottles - glass is better; processed foods - whole foods are better; sugar - get rid of it in your diet! We want to alkalize our body - acidity is not your friend! Dr. Carfora has a way to make a daunting situation appear simple! Thank you Roxanne!

Deep breath number two: Friday night the Tai Chi instructor wrote an email at approximately 7:45 that he would not be able to attend. Shallow breathes - a quick google and a call to the Smithtown Body & Brain Training center explaining our position. After consideration and a glance at our website - they offered to send a Tai Chi Instructor to the Hilton Garden Inn Saturday afternoon. Exhale!!! Thank you Michele - you were awesome!

Who's coming, who's staying, who's helping, who's going to be late to help, who is that person who came to film???....deep breathing! There was not a minute to spare, these wonderful guests were shuffled here and there and back, up and down...it was busy!

Chef Kathryn, The Health Concious Chef, had us holding our breathe learning about the adulteration of the food we eat, but also gave us the steps to make simple changes (you all know I like baby steps). Chef Kathryn also gave us handouts galore, recipes and information to keep us busy ingesting food facts for days. She suggests keeping them by your bedside with a HIGHLIGTER, and taking all this valuable information in a bit at a time....we'll be grazing information like we should be grazing food.

Deep breathing (literally)- Yoga with Lida.......Tai Chi with Michele....... Reiki with Rosemary, Teresa, Barbara...Thank you all!

Suffolk Community College (Debbie and I met and graduated as Fitness Specialists from SCCC)sent a student to tape a documentary on Strength for Life, of course he never confirmed he was coming and he arrived before us. All is good!

Two Hofstra University students came to film a PSA for their school and stayed more than five hours filming, interviewing for a 3+ minute clip. Shari (one student) found us by googling cancer and exercise and eventually located Strength for Life. Her mom is involved in a program in California and Shari selected Strength for Life for her project. As I wrote a note of thanks to Shari and Kiki, I told them how thrilled I was that they were able to meet with Evelyn's daughters and how the circle seemed to be complete.

Strength for Life, as you may already know, was founded in memory of Evelyn Knapp, an exercise physiologist and co-founder of Personal Training Institute who lost her battle with breast cancer at 40 years old in 2005. Evelyn's three daughters, now 10 - 16 years old, joined us this wellness weekend to see what we have achieved in memory of their Mom. Shari and Kiki were able to interview the girls and that was heartwarming for Debbie and I.

So much more, too much for a Sunday blog.

Thank you all for another successful weekend, we could not have done it without all the helping hands!

Dr. Carfora's "Five Tips to Weight Loss"

1) Know your gut history

2) Know if you have food allergies

3) Know if you are absorbing your nutrients

4) Know your hormone levels

5) Know your net carbs

All of these can be learned from your history and from current tests available.

Among the other topics discussed by Dr. Carfora, sex hormones and their effects on the body and the role of antioxidants.

Very informative! Thank you Dr. Carfora!

Rattled this week...........

hearing about unhealthy food choices. Believe me, I do not claim to be pure in food choices but watching an Oprah show about the documentary "Food Inc." was thought provoking. A few years ago I read "Skinny Bitch" also about making informed food decisions - but carefully skipped the chapter on the cruelty in raising some animals.

As you know there are no shortcuts in life, you need to crawl before you walk - if you don't you still need to learn to crawl....well I guess I needed to learn a little about how our food is being raised.

28 million pounds of antibiotics consumed by the animals we eat

So it is not just calories, fats and carbs - calories in vs. calories out, we must consider what has been added and what has been taken out of our food choices. Chickens are now raised and slaughtered in 1/2 the time; they have been re-engineered to have larger breasts (because we prefer white meat), they never see sunlight, the rapid growth process does not allow for their bones to support their weight - so they cannot take many steps...and so on
OMG! A good friend of mine spared me this graphic vision - when she informed me that she recently decided to eliminate meat (chicken) from her diet.

Michael Pollan "Food Rules" does not profess total elimination - but he does want us to be conscious of our food choices - free range animals, less antibiotics, grass fed! If you read the previous blog on Dr. Marla Friedman - perhaps this was one of the books she quoted. (the name escaped me) The result of all these antibiotics being ingested - germs that are resistant to antibiotics.

Children today consume twice as much soda as they do milk - Let us divorce from sugar!

As always - way too much information for a blog - but worthwhile to consider.

Positive Defiance......

Not in disobedience, rather in opposition to things that are the norm - yet not good for us.

Dr. Marla Friedman spoke for one and half hours and I do believe we could have listened to more. Always the way you want it to end - wanting more. The night was the second meeting of the Big Long Island Million Pound Challenge, orchestrated by Alex Lubarsky of NAVEL Expo. To sum up that time in a short blog would not do justice to the impact she had on the participants.

Divorce from sugar - was repeated over and over. We are a society loaded with sugar and junk food - we are not junk?!!! Dr. Friedman gave reference to a few books - of course the names escape me - "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser may have been one of them! Not carrying a pen and paper does not do well for me!

One of the most positive points that Dr. Friedman made to all of us, is that although we may not have the skills to achieve what we want - at this moment- these skills can be learned.

Another point, well received, is that so many of us eat to fill a void, or emptiness and what we should be doing is embracing it! Afterall there are religions that honor the void or emptiness. "Zen is an approach to religion, arising from Buddhism, that seeks religious enlightenment by meditation in which there is no consciousness of self."

Zwanger Pesiri - Give Back Sundays!!!

You know how we like to keep you informed of anything that comes our way. Debbie found out about this program offered by Zwanger Pesiri (Radiology) for those you may know without health insurance.

http://www.zpgivebacksundays.org/

To be eligible, you must:

1. Have a referral/prescription from a doctor.

2. Live in Nassau or Suffolk County.

3. Not have health insurance

"On April 19, 2009, Zwanger-Pesiri launched a program called Give Back Sundays, which provides radiological services at no charge to disadvantaged and uninsured Long Island residents. With the huge success of Give Back Sundays in 2009, we will be continuing the program into 2010, running all year. Each of our eight offices will be hosting a Give Back Sundays.

Our entire program is staffed by volunteers, including radiologists, technologists, receptionists, etc. In turn, we are encouraging patients to donate their time and effort to other volunteer organizations. The goal is to inspire more people to help each other on Long Island. This project will give the Zwanger Pesiri volunteers a true sense of pride and public service, but more importantly give people the diagnostic imaging studies they need and cannot afford.

The next Give Back Sunday will be on March 21, 2010 at our Merrick location"
