In "Our" News........

So read all about it!!!!
There is going to be the First "Big Long Island Million Pound Challenge" launched this Tuesday March 2, at the Personal Training Institute located at 50 Glen Cove Road, Greenvale at 8 pm. Alex Lubarsky of the NAVEL EXPO has orchestrated the first annual event to help Long Islanders drop pounds, get healthy and help a cause "Strength for Life." Alex has invited Dr. Linchitz and John Basedow to be the first of many presenters to help Long Islanders get on the right track towards health and wellness. We are ecstatic to be chosen as the recipient of any funds raised in a way that "everyone wins".

"Long Island, like the rest of the country is getting bigger, heavier or perhaps, fatter, to put it bluntly. The fat, with its aesthetic unsightliness creates a fertile environment for chronic health issues like diabetes, cancer, heart disease and just about every other illness under the disease spectrum.
Exercise, is known as a powerful ally in strengthening the lives of those trying to recover from cancer, our challenge to Long Island, our challenge to you: reach your desired goal weight as you help raise money that will provide a free exercise program for those in the battle of their life. Each pound of unhealthy fat you lose, will improve another human being’s chances of winning. You lose fat, people with cancer re-build strength, everyone is inspired … we, all of us, win!

Register at your local Personal Training Institute (PTI), set your goal
weight, take a ‘before’ picture and invite your friends to sponsor you
at $1 per pound. That’s all!

Information about this event can be found at the Navel Expo link on this page.

Anyone out there have any connections to car/van rentals? The Ragnar Relay, May 14-15 needs two 15 person vans for the long haul from Woodstock to the Bronx. We have a team of 12 willing participants that will run for Strength for Life to raise funds - and a donation/great discount on these rentals would help us tremendously.
Just putting it out there - you never know!!!

All Good Things....

Sorry for the lapse in writing - many wonderful opportunities are on the horizon and each one is pulling in a direction. All is good - just haven't had a moment to allow some ideas to formulate and share with you.

A "social entrepreneurship" graduate class at C. W. Post has adopted us! Debbie and I will meet with them on Thursday evening and discuss how they can make us a team project. We presented some of our objectives and they are willing to help. Thank you Lord! Priority 101- grant writing! There are a few grants available that we are eligible for but need the expertise of a grant writer. Eleven hours spent on one in the past showed us that we may not be able to pull that off.

So many opportunities are presenting themselves to us (at once) and the "control factor" is a hard thing to let go of! "Trust" and "Have Faith" are the mantras we are abiding by.

Social networking works......

Ovarian Cancer Research Fund
Would not have found out about this fundraising event if I had not joined Facebook and been introduced to so many causes and wonderful individuals. Kelly and Buddy Valastro, from TLC's "Cake Boss", rolled up their sleeves along with 5 teams of baking enthusiasts to help make a difference for OCRF. Cast your vote for the best cake. No commitment on your part but a few clicks and a very short registration (which could be a deal breaker).

Please go to this website and bake a virtual cake or vote on a cake. Electrolux and Kelly Ripa are proud to support the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund whose mission is to fund research to find a method of early detection and ultimately a cure for Ovarian Cancer. Electrolux has committed to donate $500,000 to this worthy cause.

Firefighter Cancer Support Network

Who knew? And if you did why didn't you share?

Dee (my daughter) went to the Stony Brook Fire Department last night to promote Personal Training Institute and met Tony and Ron. Dee is programmed to promote Strength for Life as well, I asked her to canvass a location to hold a class.

Lo and behold, she finds out about the "Firefighter Cancer Support Network". From my brief conversation with her, she said that many have been stricken with prostate cancer and although their doctor's have advised them to exercise - that is all the direction they have been given. We can help! This morning I quickly sent out an email to Tony and Mike - (the two email addresses I had been given and await an answer).

The Firefighter Cancer Support Network is a 501(c)3 charitable organization

"The Mission of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network is to provide Fire Department members and their families an opportunity to receive assistance when dealing with cancer.

Together we can offer comfort, strength and hope through our own experiences in dealing with the devastating effects of cancer.

Together we can educate Fire Department members regarding the importance of cancer screenings and early detection.

Together we can provide an awareness that cancer does not have to be dealt with alone.

Together we can make a difference."

What a wonderful opportunity for us to be able to give back to those who have put themselves out there for us!

So, if you knew about this - perhaps you know about others that we can contact and assist.

Horoscopes...to believe or not to believe.....

Astrology has always been something I dabbled in -
afterall I grew up in the '60's. OMG, yup, it is true.
In any event "astrology" is a very unique belief, the study of the stars/constellations according to the Greeks.

If you read your horoscope prior to "a happening" does it differ from reading it afterwards. It appears that you are directed in your understandings of events later and are guided to appreciation of events prior.

Point of this blog - both Debbie and I had some really positive horoscope readings for the month of February and we believe!!!!! We believe because we are ready for good things to come about; we trust that we have paved the way and why not????

It is the law if attraction; it is the power of positive thinking;
it is what will be!

When a man feels throbbing within him the power to do what he undertakes as well as it can possibly be done, this is happiness, this is success."

Just in Case.............

Social networking?!! I'm old and don't know much about this and how to best navigate through -however I am plodding along. In doing so I have come across some really fabulous organizations I would like to share with you just in case....you have not taken the plunge.

At one time "googling" would bestow an enormous variety of information...today the information comes delivered to you by way of friends, acquaintances, colleagues that we are socially networking with. Since my time is limited - I may not "google" as much as I want or need to - but I have learned about incredible tidbits through Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. I am sure there are many more I can explore - but give me time.

Cancer CoPay Relief (http://www.cancercopayrelief.org/)"Our mission is simple: To share the burden of cancer by providing financial assistance to those currently undergoing treatment."

Imerman Angels ( http://imermanangels.org/index.php) "If you are a cancer fighter, survivor, or caregiver and you are interested in 1-on-1 support, please visit their website, www.imermanangels.org --click the "Get Connected" link in the upper right hand corner of the home page. A new screen will pop up--fill out the info, submit it, and a connection specialist will get back to you shortly!"

These are two wonderful organizations offering us assistance as we journey through this disease. We have hope, we have strength and we have much to be thankful for.

God Bless!

Be a beginner.................

You can learn new things at any time in your life if you're willing to be a beginner. If you actually learn to like being a beginner, the whole world opens up to you.
~ Barbara Sher

As you know some messages have a way of getting in your face, this one did that to me. As you may have read in earlier blogs I am a believer in "baby steps" and setting your self up for success. Yes indeed - that is what I truly believe - but somehow for me, myself- it doesn't always apply.

I did run for a while, ran the NYC marathon then stopped for a lengthy time, picked it up again some 7 years later and ran for quite a few years. In a nutshell, I got sick and had neuropathy and walked with a cane for a while - slowly everything came back (thank you Lord!). Last year my daughter challenged me to participate in a Mother's Day run with her - a first! How can a MOM say no? I huffed and puffed and my heart rate was above max heart rate and it was terrible! and I was slow - UGH! OK, accept the challenge, try again - do the summer series - short runs only - it was ugly!

Got over hot weather - and decided I was not going to let this get me - I started as a beginner...I allowed myself to start slow, no pressure. What a relief to let go of what was and be present in what is. I am now feeling much better about myself and about my ability to run a 5K. Slowly I will increase speed and/or miles. But it feels so good.

That is why this quote struck me, I would be the first one to break down goals for you into achievable successes - and so happy I was able to do the same for myself. Be as kind to yourself as you would be to others!
